Alright. So my college is starting this new program which seems extremely weird and moderately invasive to me, but I’m not sure if I’m over-reacting because of how much this place has screwed me over. So I’d like some opinions from anyone else who has been to or is going to college. Any college. Any country.

My college is starting a new program where they will be adapting the grade monitoring program to monitor a hell of a lot more than grades. They will now be monitoring who goes to what clubs and how often. Who volunteers where and how often. Who goes to the student help center when and for what and how often. Who does basically anything on campus when, where, and how often. They’re saying they’ll be using this information to give out “accolades.” They really don’t say what accolades actually are. They hint that they’ll be used in consideration for scholarships, but otherwise they’re very vague on all of it. Point is though, they’ll basically be monitoring every single thing we do and keeping a record of it.

It just…seems weird that they’re keeping that close an eye on us and what we’re doing. But maybe it’s just me? IDK. Am I being paranoid here guys? Or is this something a lot of colleges do?

I don't think they're keeping that close of an eye. My University is the same, but it's very behind the scenes. We have to sign up to clubs online, so I imagine there is a record of that somewhere that the University has. We also have awards given out to those who volunteer a set amount of hours, so records need to be kept there. Then, there's the Careers service which records the appointments you've made, the courses you've been on, etc.

It all goes on the transcript for (hopefully) good purpose. In my Uni, a lot of the extra-curricular stuff is accredited on your report, which is a good thing because of jobs/employment/etc.

I don't see any problem with it really unless there are penalties for not doing something. From what you said, it seems like they are trying to give people who work harder and volunteer more recognition for their work. I'm not sure why they are monitoring the student help center unless they want to gather statistics on something. Either way, it doesn't seem like anything that should be cause for worry.

Hmm. Alright.

It may have just been the way the e-mail was worded but the whole thing just seems OFF to me. But also, like I said, I'm paranoid about anything my college does at this point so I might just be overreacting here.

Thanks for weighing in.

No problem! ^^ You might be right. I'm just working off of what you said, so I can't know for sure what's really going on. Either way, being wary is smart.
