It actually isn't that bad, there's just a few little things that need fixed. I think people are blowing this way out of proportion based on those few things, but that doesn't change the fact that something needs to be done.

Basically it's just a more streamlined way of submitting just about everything. It brings the submission process of art, news, journals, and literature all together. Sta.sh also allows you to upload multiple files all at once by simply dragging and dropping them from your computer. You can then sort those files into different folders. These files don't appear in your gallery yet, however, but they do have comments enabled and a private link to them that you can give out. This link allows you to get feedback on your deviations before you actually submit them, which is an awesome, and very helpful feature.
Then there's the Sta.sh writer, which just came out a couple days ago, and that is what has been causing most of the complaints. The system is still very buggy and for some reason went straight to the site, rather then being beta tested (which may be a bug in and of itself...). The writer has a lot of potential and has some awesome capabilities already, but it still needs some work and needs a little rethinking overall.

uploading several images at once sounds good, but no testing? bad idea

They keep insisting it's still in Beta testing, despite the fact that everyone can use it.
