The veneer should get here tomorrow, so I did one little step to keep myself occupied 'til then.  One square of gold leaf was enough to cover my carved-in sigil with a bit left to scrape into the scraps jar.  The adhesive had spread to more than just the carved grooves, but I'd made sure to carve them deep enough that the extra gold and glue could be vigorously sanded away without ruining the lines.
