‘No, on second thought, let’s not go to Brighton. Tis a silly place.’
For Infernal Devices by Philip Reeve, to follow up from my Mortal Engines.
I’m well aware of various discrepancies (Brighton’s not a paddle steamer! And it doesn’t have jaws! Etc). I intentionally didn’t reread the descriptions of Brighton from the book because, as with my London for Mortal Engines, I wanted to make an image that sold the idea of the thing immediately rather than adhering to the particulars. In the end, though, this picture has wound up being much more of a straight-up illustration rather than a graphicy thing like the Mortal Engines pic…
I wanted to stay within the retro posters theme (the Mortal Engines cover was inspired by an Abram Games meisterwork) and I went for the pastel shades of a 30s seaside poster for this’n.
