as if

as if there had been an option,
                 a choice in this matter
                 called life
champions of "if" we are
                 always hoping
                 on and on
but the graveyard cures us
                 no more "ifs"
                 no options left
and luckily no illusions either
                 these were lives, too
                 disappointed and vain
us and them
here and beyond

but the grass and the blackbirds
the sun and the rain
and the days the days the days
                  remain
