I've needed eye surgery for quite a while now and finally had it last Thursday. There was a bit of a hiccup so I'm a little more sidelined than I expected, for a longer time than I expected. It's kind of hard for me to read right now and I can't really appreciate most images so I'm going to just let most things pile up until I can do them a little more justice. Hopefully that's a week from tomorrow! Or at least close to it.
I'm actually working on a piece right now (yay for vector images that are still easy to work with even if you zoom in to 500%!) that I hope to have finished tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me that it actually ends up looking the way I think it will!

The first thing I submitted from Illustrator was this seal I used in a graphic at work. It's not horrible and it's not good. It was workable because it was quite small in the final image, though. Still, I barely knew how to use the program at this point.
I imported a sketch into Illustrator and made this baby dragon. I meant to come back later and add shading when I learned how but I haven't gotten to that yet. My shading skills are still pretty green so it's not such a bad thing that I haven't done it yet.
I did this shortly after. I was trying to make something else and I realized I was starting to make an oriental fan, so I went and found a picture online and tried to copy it. I came closer than I thought I would. The kanji was courtesy of MotherofDragons, who is awesome.
Then I had a period where I had more time to practice in Illustrator and I began to improve a bit. The tablet was from a tutorial (which I didn't follow exactly because it was waaay too confusing), which introduced me to the basics of the gradient mesh tool. What came after was me trying to really learn the gradient mesh tool, which I can't say I mastered but did at least improve with.
I think I did fairly well on the below:
But terribly when trying to draw people:
Most recently I did these. The first was with a tutorial, the second was just trying to use what I learned on a different sword. I clearly still have a long way to go.
I've made some improvements but I've come to accept I won't ever actually be good at this. Still, I'll continue to try to improve. Even if all I end up being able to reliably produce are the flat vector graphics I need for work, that's still good.
I want to make sure to thank MotherofDragons, who introduced me to DA and has tried to carefully encourage me in the little steps forward I've been able to make. She's pretty freaking awesome and you should check out her gallery.
:devFalconFate: Tagged me for this some time ago. I've finally gotten around to doing it. Almost none of them make sense, unfortunately.

I don't usually have much interest in contests. People do some amazing art here on DA and while the prizes are usually beautiful pieces, they aren't ones that I'd want to put up anywhere. This one, however, has a piece I would very much like to have. Can you guess which one? And I really need some art for my apartment but my own "art" isn't the type you frame and put on a wall. :/
If you join the contest, remember to go to kandroid96.deviantart.com/jour… and comment on his journal (not mine; you wouldn't want prints of any of my stuff!), then add to your watch list. Which you should do even if you don't enter the contest. He's pretty cool.
So you guys wanna win something? I know that you do. I have done a poll on it before xD. Anyways. I am changing the criteria a little bit on the contest.
Criteria to enter?

1. You must post these rules. (OK)
2. Each person has to share 10 things about themselves. (OK)
3. Answer the 10 questions asked of you and invent 10 questions the people you tag will have to answer. (OK, except I'm not going to tag anyone)
4. Choose the 10 people and put them on your journal. (Nope)
5. Go to their page to inform them they are tagged. (I promise I will - all zero people)
6. Not something like "You are tagged if you read that." (Definitely not!)
7. You have to legitimately tag 10 people. (No tag-backs.) (Nope.)
8. You can't say you don't do tags. (Sorry, I don't do tags)
9. YOU MUST MAKE A JOURNAL ENTRY, NOT COMMENT. (I made a journal entry but if you are willing to reply only as a comment, go for it)
Now, the ten questions from FarCryDreamer that I'm supposed to answer:
1.) Now that I'm thinking about Magic, what's your mana?
Green. No, Red. No, hybrid Green and Red! Gruul all the way!
2.) Do you know what Pogs are?
I do not.
3.) What song do you believe best describes you?
“Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd
4.) Nervous habits?
Organizing things. Bouncing my leg. Fiddling with pens. Analyzing everything within an inch of its life, then analyzing that last inch, too.
5.) Think of something you don't see anymore, and tell about it here.
6.) Favorite day of the year?
Christmas Day – when I am lucky enough to be with my family, anyway.
7.) What method do you use to tie your shoes?
I use an over-under method.
8.) Most annoying cartoon you've ever seen?
Family Guy. I can’t even watch an entire episode.
9.) What's that one animal that just gives you the creeps?
10.) Which comes first for you, the story, or the title?
The 10 questions for anyone who feels like answering to answer - no pressure at all.
1.) What is your quest?
2.) What is your favorite color?
3.) What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow? (Before you ask “European or African,” I mean specifically the Blue-and-white Swallow of Brazil. Hah!)
4.) What is your favorite medium for art?
5.) What keeps you up at night? (If nothing keeps you up at night, then what worries you most?)
6.) Who do you most admire?
7.) If you could live anywhere you choose, where would you live?
8.) What is your greatest fear?
9.) Who makes you smile the most?
10.) Can you tell a smile from a veil?
I used to draw as a kid and wasn't half bad at it. My older brother is quite skilled as an artist and would sometimes give me pointers. When I was about 9, I stopped. I drew a handful of things over the years but very little, so naturally what skills I had withered and I didn't gain any new ones. Fast-forward to now and I find myself on a career path that requires me to create graphics and I'm kicking myself for wasting a few decades. I really need to improve my skillset.
I'm currently working almost exclusively in Adobe Illustrator because vector images are what we almost always need at work. I'm picking up my skill with the pen tool and am trying hard to grasp the gradient mesh. I'm being hampered by my lack of practice creating shadow and tones in an image so I'm creating as many images as I can that require shadows and tones. But I really need some advice from those who understand shadows and tones. I would also love some advice from those who use Adobe Illustrator but really, I'm so far behind that I'm not going to be picky about what program someone uses. Shadows and tones are what they are, regardless of what program or medium a person is using. I'll worry about how to make the program do what I need it to do as I figure out what I need to do.
If anyone is willing to give some advice or tips, I would be grateful!
