The Ward: Test Panels by karniz The Ward: Test Panels by karniz
:icondonotuseplz::iconmyartplz:

Drawn: July 2011
Program: Pencil/Pens & Painter IX
From: The Ward [original comic in progress!]

For my comic, The Ward, I wanted to do the whole thing colored. Here is where I ask for a suggestion of my viewers.

The three panels above are done in three different DRAWN ways, but they're rendered [almost] the same... I need to know which looks the best.
Sadly, looking back, I should've done three of the same panels instead of different scenes... because the middle panel, inked lines, looks intense!

But yes - I would appreciate if I got some input on this, would help me decide which method I want to use! Thank you!

I like the way you drew the top one the most! :) All of them look great though! So excited about this!

Panel #1 and #3 really give it real classic comic book style that I find very impressive and stylish.
Let's see who wins :)

I think the third panel's lines look the best - the cleanliness of the first two panels is nice, but the pencil rendering gives the third panel a bit of texture that I think looks really good!

I personally like the way the third one renders too - plus when I go to actually DO the comic I can focus on lines for detail rather than the CGing process... mmhmmm.... /sage-nod

I've kinda got a crush on the bottom one. It looks like it's easier to keep up with, as well. :>

I am leaning more towards either the first or third panel. I feel the second panel is too "busy" and may be a bit distracting to the viewer, wheras panel 1 and 3 are easier to follow. This could either be the coloring/drawing methods used, or it could be that particular panel being an awkward choice... Hard to say really. [Especially since i am so out of practice with coloring/inking things... arg.]

As crazy as it may sound, I think the method used for the third panel would be great for emphasis. Like, a particularly intense moment or storyline event occurs, that style drawing+coloring can really heighten that feeling and really drive the message home. The first panel manages to be very vibrant but not too busy, it catches the eye and really makes the image pop. Since comics rely so heavily on visual emphasis and queues I think a possible mix of the two methods, or primarily the first method with a bit of the third for specific moments/emphasis would work really well. Especially since this is more of an action oriented comic.

At any rate I am loving crazy demon monkey guy more and more... I am slightly afraid of this. Gahahaha. xD;

Mrph, don't look at the CGing! It's more or less the actual lines that I'm looking at, since the top is clean pencils [which take more time], second is inks [bolder/stronger lines, also cleaner in a sense... I feel this one might be the way to go?], third is a quick-n-dirty blended pencil [to which I *won't* be shading... since the pencils will technically do that...]
Hehe, refer to the black and white copy on my LJ for better reference, I think?
I *knew* after I posted this that I should've redrawn the same panel three times... the dark and busy-ness of Echidna's panel might make this unbalanced... but it seems most people are drawn to that method - which I have to say is my favorite way to render comics... allows me to be messier in my sketching stage, mwahahaha.
And he's actually based off a water buffalo~ with a scorpion's tail... and horns... he's a chimaera-thing... I dunno! Haha~

crazy water buffalo demon guy then... either way I love him to pieces and I don't know why. haha!

As for the linework... 1 and 2 look very similar to me, maybe 2 looks a bit "cleaner"? I personally like how panel 3 works, gives a nice emphasis! in terms of actual drawing/"Inking" method, then I still say do a type of mix... I know you like actually inking your work, and it always looks spiffy when ya do it. But the third panel just has that extra oomph to it. So again, maybe do primarily one method for inking/general layout, and the other for specific points/emphasis?

YAY I'M NOT HELPFUL AT ALL! \o/

I would LOVE to, but sadly I cannot mix the methods used... Like if I mixed the rendered pencils but with inked components, I'd have to make sure I don't smudge the pencil but also be able to erase the guidelines for the inks! eep... > <;; I can fit more detail in with pencil in general, and I won't have to worry about ink quality in the pens [I hate it when I get a new pen, and for the first couple of sessions it's seeping ink like crazy till it reaches a "normal" level...] but I have to keep pencils very neat, and store them properly till I scan them in...
UNNHGHHH... I'M SO TORN.
Although, I'm happy you like Stavros. [I think he reminds you of Rapier, that's why you like him! XD]

well like I said, maybe have the third panel's options/pencilworks strictly for emphasis? Like a really intense scene etc. it's just an idea. I'm not saying it's a good idea, but it's an idea. haha.

I think that may be it... Stavros is Rapier and Ram's psychotic bastard child....

I too hate that with new pens, myself. it's all "Yeah got me a new pen Imma use iOHGODWHYSMUDGINGANDBLEEDINGEVERYWHEREMAEKSTOPWHANO"

Im actually in a bind because the inking pens I normally use are drying out, and I have NO CLUE where to get replacements/if they do replacement ink holders/whatever it's called for them.. hooray?

And who knows, I might mix it around for back flashes n' such...? THE POSSIBILITIES...
Normally you can get a refill determining on the type of pen. What was it again? I remember them being... grey? Was it a Staedler <sp> pen?
HAHAHAHAHA Poor Rammiel. ♥ ♥ ♥

I managed to score refills on the cheap via dickblick.com.... I love that site

I am crazy and use copic multiliner sp pens. Yup. Though I totally say use the mixed method for flashbacks etc... it would look AMAZING.

And yes, Poor Rammiel indeed.... Ohohohohoho!

I like the 2nd and 3rd, the 1st not to fond of, sorry...But the 2nd would be really cool for quick flashes of the characters, like while they're in motion or something, while the 3rd is good for more 'stationary' ones...But it's up to you, they look good regardless lol

But I REALLY like the 3rd a lot...Like bunches lol :D

I was moreso asking about how the line art is rendered - as in clean pencils, inks, or rendered pencils. Is that what you meant in your answer? [whee! the 3rd is my favorite way to render... ^ ^;;] Don't look at the action in the panels itself, it's my mistake for not doing the same panel in three different ways... /sulks
