“Whatever you think you can do or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, grace and power in it.”
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

This is the first in a series of Tarot-inspired mystical angels I'm creating. I've always been moved by the imagery of the Tarot, so I thought it would be neat to create an entire set of Major Arcana renders done in an "angelic" theme. I believe that angels are unique and individual, and that they have as many character facets as humans do. Every angel has a purpose here in this world, and their images will reflect those purposes. I hope this project continues to hold Muse's interest, because it has so far been quite fun to think about.

There is an obvious depth-of-field blur here, which I added in postwork. I almost ALWAYS do DOF in postwork when using Poser, even though Poser has DOF rendering capabilities. The results I create in postwork are usually smoother, easier to tweak, and result in MUCH lower render times. To do this, I generate a z-depth layer from the PPro2012 render options for the DOF map. I then turn this into an alpha channel and use it in a photoshop lens blur.

A note about the z-depth option in Poser (and in DS, for that matter)... it does NOT include transparency -- something I REALLY wish that SM would have addressed in this release. Grr.

In case anyone was wondering... I get around the issue as follows: I render the foreground figure (where there will be little or no DOF blur) as a .png, and I open it in photoshop as a layer above the z-depth image. I select the entire figure png, then invert the selection so only the non-figure portion of the scene is selected. Then, on the z-depth layer (using a combination of the paint brush and clone stamp) I paint over the parts of the z-depth layer that SHOULD be transparent. Kind of a pain in the tushie, but still MUCH faster and easier to control than waiting for the DOF to render.

This render has only ONE specular-only point light to bring out glossiness. The rest of the light comes from off-screen props with ambient values and indirect lighting. This render took under 10 minutes to complete on my i7 desktop. (!!!WOOOT!!!) I'm so happy to have a version of poser that will complete my rendering in LESS time than it takes me to set the scene OR do my postwork!! :D

Rendered in Poser Pro 2012. Postwork in Photoshop CS3. Download for full 1600 x 2350 resolution.

Thank you!  I never did finish all the Tarot images -- I forget they're around!  :D

Yay! I'm so glad you're doing a series of Tarots! I love this!!! When I was a kid, my mom had a set of Tarot cards that I found to be the most beautiful and magical things in the world. They fascinated me. They still do! You really created something beautiful, and, well, magical here! Bravo!

I used to be REALLY into them -- learned a lot about their history and about the many different symbols in them. The Tarot really IS a fascinating subject. So many different, beautiful decks, and such a rich tradition of mysticism and magic. I am enjoying the project tremendously!! It is a good, positive direction for Muse to go in -- much less gloom and doom than the last few months! :D

Thanks so much for commenting!!

What a great idea! I am very fascinated with tarot cards and have never tried to render them. Love this! Your lighting is wonderful. One point light and then ambient light from objects. Very cool! Great job with your depth of field and your lovely angel! Coool! I look forward to viewing what you come up with for this project! One of these days I might get a chance to play in Poser 2012 :faint: hehe

I used to read Tarot cards as a hobby when I was in college. I only recently realized how much I learned about my intuition and my sense of imagery from that hobby... I'm not "new age" by ANY stretch of the imagination, and I think it was one of those things I did because it was interesting, a little "forbidden," and had such a rich history. Not sure how much stock I put in the cards' ability to "see the future," lol, but they DO provide an amazing tool to become aware of how YOU see a situation. When you start trying to apply a card's meaning to a particular situation in your life, you start to think about how you are acting and feeling... it is an interesting self-examination tool. And they're so pretty, too, lol!!

You MUST have your version of Poser by now... I hope it is going well. I barely have time to BREATHE during the week, but I'm anxiously looking forward to Friday when I can sit down and dig through the pile of artwork in my "watching" categories. SO MANY people have cool things up that I want to comment on, but have not had time to yet. You are on that list -- and if you have Pro 2012 working, I'm betting the stack of images from you will be growing! :D

I have never read them, but I think they are so fascinating. They do have such a rich history and I think that is what draws me to them. That's so cool that you have actually read them. Wow, what a great way to self examine as well! Cool! This may be just the ticket for you at this time in your life? yes? Awesome! I can't wait to see what you come up with, you always have such a great grasp on things. Yea! ;P

I do. I just installed it late last night, but was too tired to play. haha Had to focus on the puter and try to get it working again. How is school going? Are you all entrenched and have good students? I hope they are all nice and bring you flowers. hehe You certainly deserve them. Homecoming is rapidly approaching too. As a teacher, are you involved with that aspect? Just curious. They are lucky to have such a brilliant and fun teacher on their staff. yea!

I hear you, I have just not felt very good and have not gotten thru a lot of mine stuff as well. boo! I don't know, I have to figure the new updates out first. haha Hopefully I will get something posted soon. It's almost been a month since I have created a new image. boo! Real Life has been stealing my focus way too much. hehe Have a great day! :icontardglompplz:

The Tarot have now officially abducted Muse. I'm VERY much enjoying this project. The combo of visual symbolism, rich tradition, and a hint of magic makes this a lot of fun. Plus, its SO much easier to create something when you have parameters. Otherwise, I often find myself just staring blankly at the screen, overwhelmed by all the crap in my runtime, not sure where to start!

Homecoming week... Oh, thank GOODNESS that is over. Lol. It was fun, but... we do homecoming pretty big at our school. LOTS of costume days, a big parade, fun themes... it was a lot to pack into a week. And the kids were insane. Lol. We all survived, though, and now it is back to business as usual. I had to dress as a "salad dressing" on Monday (don't ask, *I* don't come up with the themes!) so, at the suggestion of my dentist, I went as Olive Oil. From Popeye. I'm about 5'11" and 120#, with brown hair, so I am the PERFECT person to be Olive Oil. I did a bun, a red shirt, a long black skirt, and brown shoes. It was a HOOT.

Real life does, indeed, steal focus. I hope yours comes back! I'm like three weeks behind in looking at and commenting on art! I had no weekend to speak of this week, because I'm working a second job, but I WILL get there. Ack! NEED MORE TIME!! If you figure out how to hit the "pause" button, please let me know... :D

I think that is great! Wish my muse would get abducted. Been kind of in limbo lately. boo! Too many changes all at once. haha ;P

Wow, you guys do go all out! How fun! It's such a great time of year, the weather cooling down and the leaves all changing. haha, that is too funny! Olive Oil! Great idea! Wow, your 5'11? Your tall girl. Do you play basketball by any chance? hehe, just curious. I'm way short in comparison, only 5'4" but probably not even that since gravity is doing such a lovely job of pulling me into the earth. haha I am muscle bound though so I can be a scrapper if need be. la la la ;P

Real life has been doing that to me a lot lately. Whenever I want to work on a render, some freaking issue or problem crops up and totally steals my inspiration. My home is almost 15 years old now and it seems everything is going on the blink all at the same time. grrrr! I about killed my fridge the other night. I had taken my computer apart in the kitchen and it started making noise like a drill and it just would not stop. I finally unplugged it so I could focus on what I was doing. haha Don't ya just hate that! la la la :iconcouragescreamplz:

Oh no, a second job? boo! What are you doing, if you don't mind me asking? Hopefully it's something that is a wee bit fun and not just another way to earn some bucks. Your plate is so full, I admire your tenacity and courage to get through. It's hard to pull up those freaking boot straps sometimes. Hugs to you sweetie! And if I find the pause button you will be the first one I will share it with! :iconfurryhugplz:

Lol, oddly -- so do I. Though, honestly, green horizontal pigtails would NOT be a good look on me. :giggle: It WAS fun to render. Surprisingly easy, too. She just popped into being! I love it when that happens!!
