Sailor Senshi Tiara Tutorial

By Kapalaka
Tada!!! I thought this tutorial would be helpful for others since this part of the costume stumped me. I almost bought one of the really nice metal ones, but then I was concerned it would tarnish.

Feel free to email me with any questions or suggestions! Go forth and make awesome Sailor Moon cosplays! :D <3

Original photo in the top right was taken by ~Cobheran and the original image is here. [link]

Also, if you are stuck on how to make your senshi uniform (or fuku) check out Cupcake Cosplay's tutorial! [link]

What's styrene plastic? Are there any other english synonymes? (I don't think, it's like foam? I kinda doubt it? *haha*) I can't find it in german shops and am quite new to crafting Cosplay-Accessoiries. Thank you a lot for any answer!

I believe it is similar to Wonderflex or Worbla. I think it's possible to make this out of craft foam, it might just be harder. :0

Holy crap! If I'd known there were SM cosplay tutorials on DA, I could've made a whole outfit long ago!! :D
I don't really cosplay, but I've always wanted to dress up as Sailor Jupiter or Sailor Moon for a party or something. Thanks for making this.

You're welcome! Good luck!

What material did you use again? Sorry!

Styrene, but you could use lots of different stuff. I have seen people use Worbla, but that stuff usually needs lots of gesso finishing to shine. :)

Do you put this on before your wig? I'm making a tiara for a different costume and am contemplating what would work better, using the elastic to attach it, or attaching each plastic end of a different tiara that sticks in the hair. :3

I put the tiara on before my wig. :)

I am making my first Sailor Moon fuku soon. I love this tutorial. I am also using Cupcake Cosplay's tutorials haha.  Thanks so much!

Could you use Worbla and craft foam to make this as well?
Kapalaka's avatar
Hi there! Yes, in fact I think that Worbla would be even easier to do this with. :D The difference with Worbla though is that you would also have to use gesso to get the tiara super-smooth, otherwise it will have the Worbla texture on it when you go to paint.

I'm very curious to see someone try this with Worbla as I don't think it's been done yet. :D Go for it!

I'm making... 7 of these out of worbla today! I usually use craft foam as a stabilizer, but I think I'm just going to use one layer of worbla to keep them thin. Also, instead of gesso, I'll be layering a few coats os wood glue to seal and make them smooth.I'll post pictures when I'm done!
Thanks for the tutorial!

Hi there, first of all thank you for the tutorial.  I was wondering if you could help with sizing the template.  i printed it out to full size and it seems like it would fit a child.  its about nine inches when together.
Kapalaka's avatar
Hi! :D The tiara is supposed to go from temple to temple and is a bit more than 1" wide. How wide is the print-out you made?
Deadeye428's avatar
Thank you for taking the time to reply ^_^  the template i printed out is 8 3/4 inches long and the width on the center line is just under an inch; about 7/8".
Kapalaka's avatar
Hmmm something definitely went wrong with the sizing of the print; the center line is supposed to measure about 1.25". ^_^'
Deadeye428's avatar
yikes.  okay i should be able to mess around and make it larger, thank you so so so much for helping me with this ^_^
