Composition Challenge

CHALLENGE RULES:

- you must do ALL 12 list items in order to be featured (See Raru-tan's first challenge journal for more info)
- list items to not need to be done one each month, though it is recommended
- in the description of your artwork for this challenge, link back to this entry so that I see it and know to feature it when the time comes
- you are welcome to use this as a reference without participating in the challenge, if you do so, linking back to this is not necessary

2017 Composition ChallengeTime for another update! There is now a deadline and a 2018 composition challenge is happening!
I'd like to take this chance to let participants know that this challenge will end on December 30th. On that day I'll be submitting the features during the day and I'll be able to keep adding to it as people submit their final entries.
I'd also like to announce that thanks to everyone's support and participation, I'll be hosting another composition challenge next year! I'll be publishing it on December 31st so I may make some changes to it between now and then, but here it is: 2018 Composition Challenge !

I was tagged in their challenge and really struck me as an interesting challenge to do. A lot of people ask me about my inspirations and how I learn composition. Here are a few of my inspirations that helped me improve my composition. Hopefully they help you too.

Most of these were taken from my favorites.

Keep in mind that some of these utilize multiple compositions. Even ones that aren't mentioned within the challenge. (triangular, Fibonacci spiral, one-color composition etc)

1. Symmetrical Composition
figures don't need to be perfectly symmetrical, but there should be an equal and similar balance

2. Asymmetrical Composition
not symmetrical but visual weight is balanced using negative space or background details

3. Circle Composition
a composition which leads the viewer's eye in a circular motion

4. Diagonal Composition
a composition which leads the viewer's eye in a diagonal motion

5. High Angle Perspective
viewer is looking down at the character, can be as dramatic or subtle as you'd like

6. Low Angle Perspective
viewer is looking up at the character, can be as dramatic or subtle as you'd like

7. Surreal 'Floating' Background
the background is incomplete and it's elements surround the character

8. Scene with Full Background
if you're up for even more of a challenge, try making the background the focus

(added another one because this is my favorite category)

9. Group
three or more characters in the same image

10. Sketch Page
various drawings in one image with the same characters/theme

11. Dramatic Lighting
can be back-lit, single light source, or done with contrasting hues

12. Minimalist
limited color pallet, minimal shading and simple composition (I found this one really hard to find pieces for--)
