Gouache painting I did based on the murals of Chiik Nahb Structure sub 1-4 (SE-S1), Calakmul, the Classic period city ruled by the Serpent (Kaan) dynasty. Calakmul or Kaan waged a hundreds' year war with their main rivals, Mutal (Tikal) during the Classic and Late Classic periods in the Maya culture heartland. This rivalry pulled countless Maya communities and cities and gave shape to the great culture in this period. This scene depicts a woman in a diaphanous blue huipil? ho...lding an olla filled with atole, while a slave or servant holds the large container over her head. A man in the back drinks the atole as he observes the scene. The murals in the back of the illustration allude to the woman in blue's profession and what goes on in those spaces.

Beautiful. Her dress looks like silk? Did the mayans have silk? How was this made and what type of fabric is it?

Not quite, I know some glyphs, but not enough to write out whole sentences. Those here come directly from a base describing this scene.

Would the Mayans have had a fabric so fine and transparent? I thought they only had cotton.

Cotton, maguey, palm. The trick is in the type of weaving. They had several techniques, and one of them was to weave the weft and warps in a manner that left a lot of space. It was not a tight one at all, this spacing allowed the textile to have a sheer quality.

It's maize gruel. It's very good, they come with different varieties, now some adding chocolate or nuts, cinammon etc. It's a beverage served warm and it's usually thick. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…
