Some of you may know that I currently do art for a living, and that living involves immense amounts of time, stress and often frustrations from doing 10-12 conventions and other shows per year in order to make my income. I debated on several ways of talking about "why I'm on Patreon", and honestly I'll be upfront with you guys because you deserve it! I need to find a way to not do so many conventions every year. I've only been doing them full time for 3 years but it's already starting to wear me down and also affecting my productivity a bit - plus usually I do them solo to boot!

Doing a show isn't just a single weekend. It's time dedicated to researching the convention. Filling out tax paperwork. Ordering stock. Prepping hundreds of prints which means signing and bagging and boarding each one individually. Then counting everything before and counting everything after each show. Recording numbers, updating the website before and after the show to reflect my absence from home, and much more.

It's a TON of work, and more importantly - TIME.
I have less time to actually focus on and create all of the paintings and ideas I've had for so long because I'm focusing on conventions so much.
And I have SO many paintings I want to work on and complete!

I want more time to just make art.

So after much, much debate I've finally looked at Patreon. I honestly didn't want to join for a very long time because it didn't feel...I guess, right for me?
But I'm beginning to see that it's not only a way to help pay bills, like I always thought of it, but to share more than I have before.

When I post online publicly I only ever post low resolution art
But on Patreon I can offer high resolution scans of paintings I'm working on, and bigger images to see details better!
I've already made a few posts and I really like the way it feels, too. Kind of like a blog of sorts, but I can upload files for folks to see and even download too. Since I'm terrible at coming up with titles I will turn to Patrons to help me decide, and also I will set up polls for folks to vote on my next artworks.

I don't want to make it a pay wall
I will still be posting art as I always have. I will still be uploading to my YouTube and posting stuff to my website.
But Patrons will be able to get more benefits, or else it might seem silly to pay monthly for something that you could otherwise get for free.
I want it to be worth it, and interactive and enjoyable for Patrons.
So, Patrons will get things like;
- permanent shop discounts (even on original art!)
- Access to new items for a full week before anyone else, including new originals in the secret shop
- Voting in all polls
- Free downloads when available
- Monthly Print
- Three slots available for monthly mini dragon painting

I just started posting to it so I don't expect a ton of folks to join, and that's totally OK!
I'm currently posting high-res WIP's of a mermaid painting I've been working on. Some of the posts made in the feed will be public so things will be mixed
Once the painting is done I'll post it here (eventually, sorry I tend to get a bit behind here!).

But anyways, if you're still reading, thanks for hearing me out =]

In January I took part in the "Make 100" event for Kickstarter with my Draco constellation enamel pins! The pins were limited edition and sold out incredibly fast, much faster than I could have anticipated.
So by very popular demand I have made an open edition version of Draco, this time with silver metal and a dark dragon instead of black. The moon will still glow!

At the same time I am releasing my 3rd enamel pin design, titled "Sky". Both pins are up for preorder now!

www.kamakru.com/bags-accessori…

If you order 2 or more pins you can get 15% off all pins with code PINLOVE
*Pins will ship in early July*

Convention season is still going strong and I have two shows lined up both in June!
I don't know the exact booth locations yet, so if I can't update this in time then you can search for me in the program guide either as "Kamakru Art" or "Katie Croonenberghs"

I've been having a very strange uptick in people coming to me saying that they created a story based specifically on adoptable that I have created and sold in the past, and I'm just not sure how this is coming about so suddenly! To be clear, I do actually create and license illustrations for book covers, but in the case of adoptables this isn't something I can negotiate.

- Adoptables have been sold to someone for real money. They paid for the design and the illustration that went with it, and thus it belongs to the buyer. Note: They cannot legally license it either, so asking someone who the character belongs to if you can use it for a book cover is also not legal. Only I have the ability to give licensing. Adoptables are for *personal use only*
- No, I will not release un-watermarked images for you to use for your book cover or to print at home of an adoptable that doesn't belong to you.
- No, you cannot use ANY artwork from my gallery for your book cover without the proper licensing.
There are very real contracts involved when you start printing and distributing (even digitally) someone's artwork, yes even for a book.

Please. I don't know who might see this but if you currently have a piece of artwork in a folder along with a large book or story you're writing, be aware of the cost of licensing to use images and whether or not that image is actually available to use. I always encourage creativity in every way possible, and I don't mind if you write stories based on artwork you find. But if you get to the point of needing an actual cover for your book know that you cannot simply take and use whatever artwork you want. Be respectful of the artist and respectful of the owners of a designed character.

I really hate making posts like this but I think it needs to be said openly. My next post will be much more exciting and happy, I promise!
I am pleased to announce that I will have a booth at Emerald City Comic Con, held in Seattle at the Washington State Convention Center from March 1-4th
My booth will be on the main floor across the skybridge from the main entrance (so it's the show floor in the conference center part of the building).
:bulletgreen: My booth is in a new section called Home Grown - #HG211:bulletgreen:
Here's my listing on the ECCC website: www.emeraldcitycomiccon.com/en…

I've been busy and I finally have a little something to show for it!

The book launch in November will happen on the official website, and recently I've been building a landing page which I'll have the news feed and dragon galleries linked to.
Once the launch happens then this page is also where you will be able to access all of the tiers and special edition goodies for the book.

Thanks for reading! =D

The next art book is....all dragons!

The last three weeks have been absolutely hard core work because I've been doing NOTHING but painting the last Smaugust dragons AND painting FOUR additional paintings for this year's art book, then editing, photo-ing, scanning, compiling, writing, conferencing with the printers and all-out creating the actual book that has - as of right now - been sent to the printers for the first pass! I have worked SO hard on this in order to get the books in time for the Holidays, and to do it I've had to make sacrifices both big and small. I've poured myself into this book and I can't wait to get back later in the month and build the page for..
the official book launch in November!

:bulletred: I highly suggest signing up for my newsletter so you don't miss the launch! eepurl.com/ci1wun  :bulletred:

On my website I'll be creating a launch page very similar to Kickstarter, with early bird tiers and special print options and offers that will only be during the launch month, such as hand embellished prints using the shiny mica metallic watercolors. This may be the only chance to get some of the prints as well, since I won't be making them all available in the regular lineup next year.

I'll be posting more about the book launch later though, because first....
Dublin!
I'm finally going on a much, much needed vacation, and regardless of the likely rainy weather I am really looking forward to the trip. ^_^
I'll likely still post to my Twitter and Instagram while I'm there, so  you can catch me there

That's it for updates, thanks for reading!

Geek Girl Con

Only two shows left for 2017, and the next one is only a week away!

The next art book!

The smaugust series will become this year's annual art book! Originally I was planning to do a Kickstarter with it, but as it turns out doing KS's so close to the end of the year gets extremely tricky, plus there's no way to get the funds in time (should it be successful) and the books printed and shipped for Christmas. I've decided to fund the book myself, which is really crazy but I think I need to go for it. I'm working on having 40 pages in the new book with a couple extra dragon illustrations to boot! There will be a big launch for it in November including tiers similar to Kickstarters - such as early bird tiers, books with sketches and special edition prints that will only be offered during the launch of the book.

For right now though I am in the very early stages of getting the book made. I've been in contact with the printers to figure out all the details while I frantically try to get the paintings done AND the files prepped and ready for print. Lots to do, and I hope you are as excited about this as I am. I will be sure to share more about it when there's more progress =]

GenCon! Art show booth #46

This will be my first year with a booth at GenCon - in fact my first year there at all! I leave in just a few short days and my mind is racing with all the things to do, but I'm so excited to experience this show. My booth will be a little smaller than the photo shown on the map (that's my DCC booth, can't fly with all of that) but I will definitely have a good selection of items including a GenCon exclusive card!

* The exclusive card is something that is only available at my booth to the first 50 customers who make a purchase.
These cards are made to be collectible, will be signed and are able to be used as tokens for MtG!

Img 20170806 093759 by Kamakru Map by Kamakru

Other things you'll find at my booth this year:
- 11x17 Prints
- Zippered Pouches
- 16x20 Limited Edition Canvas Prints
- Select Tapestries
- Full collection of small original artworks

Smaugust 2017

I have started posting this year's Smaugust pieces, though to see them each day they're posted check out my Twitter, Instagram or Facebook to see them for each day. As they get posted the originals are automatically listed at the same time on my website here: www.kamakru.com/smaugust-origi…
I'll be bringing all remaining original Smaugust paintings with me to GenCon, so if there's one you're eyeballing I recommend grabbing it by August 15th, or if you're going to GenCon you can stop by and see them in person! Which of course, they all look better that way anyway ;)

DCC

Denver Comicon was a huge success, thank you everyone who stopped by the table to say hi, chat and pick up something from the booth this year!
I try my best to always offer something new at my table so it's never just the 'same old same old'. There's always going to be those staple pieces of
course, but I'm so happy that my Ink & Coffee series was so well received! I still want to do another 10-15 illustrations for it at the very least, but with
convention and travel season underway it's become a challenge. Never fear, I will overcome!

Denver Comicon Booth 2017

It was an absolute pleasure to be surrounded by friends this year at the booth - BetaTestedRobot on one side, soulofwinter and Justin Mayhew as my backyard neighbors. Big thanks to my booth minions and friends Nick and RinAvenue for the much needed help. Couldn't have asked for cooler people to hang around all weekend!

GenCon - HO BOY

So this is the first time I'll be doing GenCon and boy am I a little nervous lol! New show, new city and I have to fly in on top of that - but it's all part of this business so just gotta go with it.
Indianapolis will mark the very furthest East I've EVER been in the US for a show. I'd love to see a few of you there if you plan to go! Help me not be so nervous haha (though I'll put on my tough face xD)
As far as what I'll have at my booth I'm still figuring out - definitely prints, a few of the tapestries and a few playmats for sure, and hopefully some Limited Edition canvas prints!

The online shop is open and updated!

If you couldn't or can't make it to the shows I go to, I have updated the shop AND added some discount codes for deals similar to what I offer at cons!

The schedule continues with the next set of shows!

Lilac City Comic Con June 3rd-4th at the Spokane Convention center.
Find me on the main show floor in the artist alley section, table B4! This is a smaller but growing convention and my 2nd year doing it. This is the first show that I will in fact let people purchase the banners from my display - so if you were one of the 43 people who asked me as Sakura-Con if you could purchase one, now's your chance! I have exactly one of each (the tall 7 foot banners in the back) you may inquire about them via email at kamakru@gmail.com
Also PS, I WILL be returning to Sakura Con for 2018 =D

[link] The Haberdashery Gallery fundraiser event in Auburn, Washington on June 17th
This is a fundraiser for a gallery that will be opening which will host a variety of my artwork! This is also a meet and greet with live music and entry is free. I will have a variety of artwork available and will be walking around chatting with everyone. Come say hi!

Denver Comic Con June 30-July 2nd
Denver Comic Con is starting to be known as my big show, and where I tend to unveil a lot of my new exciting products! Last year I had tapestries, and this year I'll have three specialty items. The first is Limited Edition stretched canvas prints which I will have in a variety of illustrations with some of the Ink & Coffee pieces - including Inktober 2016 #4 - The Kraken and some other popular pieces. The second items are something I've been asked about a LOT - gaming play mats! I am currently working these up and will have at least 3-4 designs available for the first time ever. The third items are...a secret! Muahaha. If you want to see what they are when I reveal them, you'll have to follow my Instagram or Twitter

Follow up from Spectrum Fantastic Art Live in Kansas City- This was an eye opening experience for me and I couldn't have been more humbled to be around such amazing artists! I had the absolute pleasure of meeting James Gourney at the show among other awesome talents. It was nothing like the other shows I do and I was absolutely exhausted from meeting so many people constantly lol. This was the first show I had to fly out to and I think it went pretty well! Managed to get my entire setup into one large checked bag, a carry on and a backpack. Here's the before and after setup

Just throwing out a friendly reminder that I am much more active on these other social media sites, in the order I give.
I try to hit up DA to reply to messages but I can barely upload everything here as it is. So if you'd like to keep more up to date with what's going on, these places will be much better :)

1 - Twitter
My cat, random thoughts, other things I might be doing, more personal stuff but still lots of art and WIP things along with announcements for new products, sneak-peeks, behind the scenes, conventions, videos, etc. Definitely most active here.

2 - Instagram
WIP art, sketches, and finished art mostly. Sometimes will post when I have a big sale, or convention.

3 - YouTube Channel
I have a lot of recorded videos waiting to be edited, voice-over added and uploaded! Also a couple tutorials, art challenges and a Q&A session planned which I'll be pulling questions from Instagram and Twitter for.

4 - Facebook
I usually only recommend FaceBook if you don't follow me on Twitter or IG, since Facebook likes to filter the heck out of everything I post so no one sees it.

I'm back from my trip to Iceland and Switzerland and holy hell has it been an amazing experience! =D
I haven't unloaded the photos yet because I flew back in just yesterday - twenty something hours of travel, 4 airports and 3 countries to get home. I'm a bit tired haha

New Website is live!

In case you missed it, a few weeks ago I launched my official stand-alone website that encompass ALL things related to my art and business.
It has my portfolio, complete convention schedule, art news/updates and the new shop

Etsy will no longer list any new items as it will not be my main shop anymore. Only a select few non-fantasy based products will remain there such as the
cat and dog illustrations and a few of the landscape ones.

New conventions confirmed!

2017 is nearly completely booked, just one more possible to add.
I managed to somehow grab a table at Illuxcon (Reading, PA) and by some complete crazy miracle I was called off the wait list for GenCon (Indianapolis, IN)!! :'D
SO HAPPY. Now when you ask if I'm ever going to a show closer to the East coast I can say YES! =]
You can see the complete list of shows on my official site

It was disappointing. And I don't mean the final result...well yes. And no. But there wasn't exactly a clear, good choice, at least not for me.

Here's the thing, to all my fellow Americans; I know some of you are pretty excited for who got voted in and probably even more are not so excited. I'm worried about a lot of things right now, but one thing that worries me even more than all the 'what ifs' that will come in the next 4 years for us, is how people are responding to this situation.

By that I mean, responding with hate and responding with intolerance.

People who voted for Hillary had their reasons. People who voted for Trump had their reasons. People who voted for neither by going for 3rd party had their reasons too. And there's no way to know why people as individuals voted the way they did, unless they make it clear for themselves. Saying "all Democrats" this and "all Republicans" this or "anyone who voted for Trump is my enemy"....stop. Just fucking stop. This is why we're so divided. I'm tired of seeing so many people just get lumped into groups and categories so they can be ridiculed and judged all at once.

If you want this to be a better place, start with yourself. Open your mind. Open your heart. Help your neighbor. Do good.
Hopefully the video will appear below instead of just the link, but if it's just the link I highly recommend checking it out. It's the full flip through of the book so you can see every page, except for the last page which I still need to add (the video is a proof copy, not the final).

The reason I'm taking pre-orders for this book when I normally don't is because of the higher cost. The books are bigger at 8.5x11 inches than my usual/older sketchbooks which were 5.5x8.5 inches. I also opted to add a heavy-duty cover to these which makes them feel so much nicer in my opinion =]

So, this all means that it's a little more difficult for me to budget a full order, especially if I want to get enough extra copies to have for those who can't afford to pre-order at this time. As much as I wish I had the funds to order all the stock I possibly could, I'm really depending on help with getting the word out for this one! I know it might be more ideal to have the pre-orders open longer, but if I want to get these shipped out to everyone by end of November or first thing in December, I'll need to place the order this week

I have posts on both Facebook and Twitter and would greatly appreciate a boost that might help make this successful ^_^
