It was the night of the monthly meeting of Alexander and Kendra’s home chapter of the Knights of Reikelt. Alex and Kendra were seated next to each other at a large round table, listening to the chapter’s abbot, its head, speak.
“The former disciple of Zalventhrax is in the Lodge now,” said Abbot Enoch Hendricks, “speaking with a pastor and one of the knights. We’ll be easing him into the order and Christ’s body. Meanwhile, Kendra… I think it’s time to send you on your first real mission with Alexander here. You’re needed at Peach Holler.”
Kendra gasped. Peach Holler? The abandoned amusement park based on her favorite childhood show? “What would the Disciples of Zalventhrax want with…”
“Not the Disciples,” explained Aliester Thorne. “But demonic activity, all the same. People have claimed to see the mascot costumes walking on their own.”
“Damn…” said Alex under his breath. “Not the guys from ‘The Zanies!’ I loved that show!”
“You too?” Kendra said, surprised.
“Who could forget Mack the Racoon and his crazy schemes to steal and marry Foxy Roxy, Mayor Fox’s daughter?” laughed Heather. “Anyway, I’ll be tagging along as backup.”
“Sounds like fun,” Alex remarked. “We’ll go after this meeting.”
“Good idea,” said Aleister. “I can’t stand the thought of Mack the Racoon being evil and smart!”
About half an hour after the meeting, Alex, Kendra and Heather were at the gates of Peach Holler. Kayleigh was waiting, a surprised look on her face.
“What are you doing here?!” gasped Heather.
“I-I was exploring… this place looked cool, so I decided…”
“Kayleigh Elizabeth Adams! Don’t you ever go near this place again!”
“But what if it opens back up?”
“I doubt it will,” Heather replied, “but… but if it does… if it does, that’ll be different. There won’t be any demons.”
“Like the one I shot a laser at, and it disappeared in this weird red fire?” Kayleigh asked.
“You… you defeated a demon?”
“This little thing with a cat’s face ran at me. I stuck out my hand to protect myself, and this purple laser zapped it, and it burned up and vanished.” Kayleigh grinned. “I like purple.”
“Definitely a possible member of the order wen she grows up,” Kendra mused.
“But not now,” said Heather firmly. “Go wait in the car. We’ll clear this place out.” As Kayleigh ran towards the car, Heather smiled. “Car has protective wards and is blessed by one of our chaplains. She’ll be safe.”
Alex smiled. “Time to clean house.”
Most of the demons were easy kills: imps and a few leapers. There were a handful of spikeheads, but thanks in no small part to Kendra’s vocal powers, they weren’t there for very long.
“What in tarnation are you doin’?!”
A large bear in a blue plaid shirt and overalls towered over the three, cartoonish shotgun in his massive hands. “Don’t y’all know it’s dangerous?”
“Grampaw Bear?” Alex said, taken aback. “Is that you?!”
“Kinda sorta,” Grampaw Bear replied. “See… we’re puttin’ in work for the Lord, the other fellers and I. We’re lesser angels, tasked with protectin’ folks from this park. Was closed down ‘cause some evil varmint opened a portal to Hell and the demons started comin’in. Portal’s closed, but this is a big place. Lots of demons to get rid of. Tonight, we had to guide a little lady back to the gate.”
“My daughter,” Heather said. “We’re here to get rid of the demons.”
“We’d mighty appreciate the help.”
“Hey…”
“Eh?”
Alex grinned. “I love your show.
Grampaw Bear let out a guffaw. “Thanks! Now let’s got these varmints off our property!!”
