Lizard Critter by KaiserFlames Lizard Critter by KaiserFlames
A quickie to practice painting with more texture. I'm going to be using this as my concept for the next project in my Gaming class, which is to model and texture a creature.

Critter ecology info:
About the size of a small pony. Lives in large temperate deciduous forests of the main continent of Docerae and uses it's bony beak, claws, spurs, and bulk to bulldoze through undergrowth. Diet consists mainly of roots, tubers, edible plants found on the forest floor, and various types of mushrooms. Food is gathered using the snout, claws, and spurs.

Males are large and solitary, while females will remain in small family groups (2 - 5 individuals usually, counting young). A female can calve every 2 years. Despite their lizard-like appearance, they are mammalian and feed their young for a very short period on nutrient rich milk before the calves are able to forage for their own sustenance. Generally, adolescent males will leave the family groups at the age of 1 to begin fending for themselves. The alpha female of a harem group will oust any aggressive females (or be ousted by them) and new groups are formed.

They are territorial, but aggression rarely results in death or injury. Most squabbles are solved with body language and losing parties will move well out of range of their aggressors.

They are relatively few in number, living mainly in the forests of Memneshta with a small number residing further south into Duaris. Though attempts have been made by humans to domesticate the creatures, they do not do well under the duress that being a pack animal or riding animal entails and are uncharacteristically aggressive towards their would-be keepers. Despite this, there have been a few successful attempts (and the current owners of these tamed beasts tend to be extremely wealthy and powerful). They are very wary of people and will clear off should sight, sound, or smell of humans arise.

Hmm. Overall, I love this, but the skin-to-?beak? transition is a little confusing. (Skip the rest if you don't want crits!)

I'd kinda like to see you do something with the mouth-to-bill(?) transition, whether with shape and/or color; right now it almost looks like a small green head (with kissy-mouth face) wearing a transparent gas-mask thing. Maybe even one whose clear grey tube extends below the throat to an underbelly sack.

I'd suggest extending a touch of the green color--maybe just the streaks?--a little way into the grey undersides of belly and throat, even though I'm aware that many real lizards have a fairly sharp transition; this is a case where realism can be less than helpful.

As for the bill/jaw/whatever, it could go either way. If it's a direct extension of the flesh/scales of the head, I'd also extend the green further forward in streaks to keep it from looking like a different substance. But if, as I suspect, it's a separate substance like a bird's bill or teeth, I'd want the end of the green skin to be _more_ distinct at the edge. In real animals, anything hard that comes up through skin, whether it's teeth or nails or claws or horns or hooves, has a sort of socket of flesh at its base, so I'd want the green hide to dent out and then in at the transition, if that makes any sense.

In any case, this is cool! Normally, I'd expect herbivores to be a prey species and therefore have larger, side-of-head eyes, but these don't look like particularly soft prey in any case. ;)

I'm not sure which pack, exactly, but it might be in this list of links I have on my website? [link] If not, I don't recall which ones... Sorry!

Care if I try to work up a 3D model of this? I'll give you the file.

Sure thing, I've got another person trying this, as well. I'd love to see what you do with it, just as long as it's for fun/education. :D

Out of curiosity, which programs are you going to be using? I'm betting Zbrush, but will they have you using Max or Maya?

I WISH Zbrush. We're gonna be using Maya and Mudbox (I almost typed Mudkip lol). And we're only allowed to use Mudbox because I nagged the shit out of the teacher.

Oh Mudbox is quite nice as well, and I've heard it has a gentler learning curve than Zbrush. All told Mudbox and Zbrush are functionally equivalent, so it's awesome you'll be using it :) I'm a Maya user nowadays, so feel free to ask me anything if you need to. Also, moving into 3D I recommend you make a point to at least poke around at
