The words were out of his mouth before he could think better of them. She took a breath and looked up to him, a small sparkle of hope lighting up her eyes. She looked back down, the shine gone, or hidden, Alexis couldn’t tell. “Lord James, even if you meant those words, I cannot just leave my castle, no one would allow it.”
“No one would know. At least, not at first,” he responded, leaning close to her.
“Oh, yes, no one would notice their Princess missing,” she retorted, then looked back to the ballroom. “Which reminds me, I have been gone quite a long while, my guests might be wondering where I have gotten off to.”
She couldn’t leave yet. Alexis grabbed her arm and she tensed at his grip. He loosened it until his hand was just barely touching her skin and murmured, “You don’t need to go yet, they’re busy dancing and talking about their dozens of gems.”
