WATCHS / FEEDBACKS / NOTES
The Watch/Feedback "text buttons/links" : Okay, it says I've got 0 things to see. But when I go on my watch, I see that I've go a lot of deviations to see (1721 deviations)... so this 0 indicates how many new deviations there are since last time I visited my watch. It would be WAY better to show 0/1721 in my case : this way I would know that I still have 1721 deviation to see, but 0 new ones since last time I saw my watch. In short, we need more info, and this is very needed. Same when I go in my feedback. Same for Notes (you could show how many newly received notes you have and how many unread notes you have).
"Global" Watch (where you see on the same page everything you watch : Deviations, Group Deviations, Journals...).
First thing that hurts, and a lot : the huge loss of navigation efficiency due to lack of global vision and easy/handy shortcuts/buttons. This is an incredible regression compared to browsing globally your notifications in current DA ! When you go in your "notifications" in the current DA and click on "all" on the left to see a glimpse of all your notifications... You have a very good idea of EVERYTHING in a glance ! In contrary to Eclipse.
And you can manage things a lot more easily too : because thumbs of devs are smaller and represent the WHOLE deviation (btw, how did you manage to crop so badly images in so huge squares in Eclipse XD), you see more in one same line, and can more quickly/easily decide which one to keep or not, and you can get rid of/manage them easily with small buttons and drag & drop.
Current DA again : there are PAGES with NUMBERS which enable an efficient and quick navigation without hesitation. With Eclipse : only left-rights arrows who lets you navigate to next or previous 4 dev's : no easy referencing, & "jumping" !
Journals thumbs are way too big too ! Every thumbs are way too big ! (look at the size of the status thumbs XD) If your point here is to provide a global overview of the watch and who permits to "manage" your notifications (quickly read/see an info and delete it on the fly because you won't be really interested by some) like in current dA, the choice of presenting things in HUGE SQUARE BOX is a very, very bad choice. This takes so much space to show almost nothing, we have to scroll so much to see what's below ! And we've got to do so many much more clicks to do too ! (especially to see more dev's : only 4 thumbs on a line means lot more clicks to see what's next to browse as many dev's/items as before).
Very bad and inefficient design who leads to a totally inefficient and cumbersome navigation (it's easy, if you need more scrolling and/or clicking, then you have worsened things). Here we've totally lost the concept of "overview in a quick glance" coupled with "managing things easily and quickly".
And unfortunately, it's not the end. In current DA, on the left, we have an awesome column with links to every section of notifications (which enables quick navigation and shows in an understandable way where we are), with even the NUMBER of devs/messages/notes remaining in each "section" (which enables to have rapid overview in a glance, to get the infos needed immediately), the folders, and the birthdays (which, again, give important infos quickly)... .. (WHERE ARE THE BIRTHDAYS REMINDERS by the way ???) We were able in one click to immediately switch to "Watch" (browsing everything watched) or only "watched journals", or only "watched groups". Or even our comments ! Or notes ! Eclipse erases all this infos and worsen readability. We have 4 thumbs in each line and NOTHING MORE. And the Eclipse "navigating" menu (where you can switch/"Jump to" to your watched deviation, your watched journals...) is again, hidden behind a new click, when in current DA you immediately see where you are, with additional infos (numbers), and click to directly go where you want to go.
[Suggestion] In this "Jump to" dropdown menu, why not showing how many of each items there are in each section ? I mean how many devs, how many journals, forums.. ? Same for the dropdown menu enabling to filter deviations/journals etc. by a specific deviant or group : why not showing how many items for this category there are aside its name ? This is a very useful information when you want to see first small/medium/big stacks of devs (for example) !
By the way, this dropdown window is way too small, and uses big font with wasted space : needs lot of scrolling to see more deviants !
-> [Suggestion] You could use your top dynamic bar to always propose the dropdown menu ? This way, when we scroll down, we would still be able to "jump to" any other place without having to go back to top.
llama and "faved" notifications are too big in feedback !
- [Suggestion] "faved" notifications : It would be nice to have a preview of the concerned deviation when you move your mouse over it's name
-> [Suggestion] Comments and mentions who show the deviation : it's nice, but it would be even better to be able to click on this small deviation to quickly access it (in addition to it's name who is a link too).
-> [Suggestion] Comments and mentions who show the deviation (and this idea is for llama and "faved" notifications too) : it would be nice to be able to activate a "compact" mode who would transform llama and "faved" notifications in one line like in current DA, and reduce size of comments and mentions, removing the small deviation preview. (And when having your mouse over the name of the deviation, a small deviation preview would appear ?)
We need to be able to drag our mouse to select multiple items, especially for deleting several of them ! (in Eclipse : for selecting several items, you have to tick each of them).
[BUG?] In the watch ("global" and when seeing deviations, journals... .) the dropdown menu who should enable us to filter things with only one deviant/group isn't filtering : when we click on a deviant, nothing happens
When deviants are stacked/grouped by artists in your watch, thumbs are big squares. Issue here is the preview : it would be waaaay better to have a small mosaic of the last devs, like for the groups. This way, we would have a better overview in a glance of lasts dev's of deviantartist, and it would avoid ugly bad cropping.
.. Talking about thumbs for the groups : mosaic is a good idea... but again, very bad cropping destroying art !
-> [Suggestion] The best would be to be able to delete quickly previews we're not interested in : you see the thumb mosaic of a group which is composed of 3 deviations, two deviations aren't interesting you : you immediately remove them (thanks to a small button somewhere on each), and the thumbs dynamically actualize. This would go a bit back to the way we were able to manage things quickly and easily in current DA. I can explain more if needed
-> [Suggestion] And : when seeing stacked deviations, it would be nice to be able to have a quick way to remove the deviation on top of the stack. Or, at least, to have the choice, in addition to "Remove all by... YES CANCEL", to have "remove the dev who is on top of the stack".
Watch : Please, please, please, enable us to disable the endless scrolling and to have numerated pages ! Everywhere ! Endless scrolling is a real chore to navigate (numerate pages helps for references, easy quick jumping...), and a real issue for a lot of desktops ! (they often struggle after having displayed "more" and "more" things). We mean it, and it is really important.
[BUG] When you're mentioned in a description of a deviation, in the feedback you see that you've been mentioned under the dev', but you see only "No description" instead of the actual description... But there is one ! I don't have this issue in the same section in current DA, and I can see the description under the deviation in Eclipse. When I'm mentioned in a comment, no problem, I can see what's written in the comment in the feedback section.
[BUG] Comments in feedback section : community icons doesn't appear
In your watch, when you browse the deviations from people you're watching, when you click in one to see it fully in its own page, there isn't anymore the button (and so the possibility) "Remove from Notification" that there is in current DA (close to the big fav' button). Really bad : it is a very convenient button who helps a lot when browsing your watch :/
In feedback, talking about comments : seeing previous comment and a preview of the concerned deviation : this is nice ! Unfortunately, there is a very bad use of space here again, and so we totally lose ability to quickly see a lot of comments and quickly answer/manage them :/ This is a real issue.
-> [Suggestion] It would be nice to be ableto edit a note we sent, as long as it hasn't been read by the receiver.
1.Watch 2.Feedback 3.Notes
Night theme and white theme aren't enjoyable at all for anything longer than "short" sessions (= more than 30minutes) on a desktop
(it's really hurting/tiring eyes very fast
). We need another theme(s), gray, a light gray and
a light green would be very welcome here
Or even better, a "dark grey", like you suggested 3 years ago : fav.me/d92g0pw that would be PERFECT
[22/12/2018] Some improvements : dark is a bit less dark and light is less bright. Better
Research : when you click on the magnifying glass to search something, the research field is way too huge ! And it would be better to have the text field background filled with a plain color to clearly dissociates it from the page, because currently it's disturbing, you aren't sure things worked well and really opened the research field.
[BUG/ISSUE] When you made a research and click on the magnifying glass again (in the dynamic top bar), it tries to reach the research field on top of the page to let you edit your research... but the jump stops just under the research field... so you have to manually scroll a bit to actually see it.
[BUG?] Research doesn't seems to perform... perfectly to find deviants associated to a keyword. We can explain more why we say this if needed. But how is working this research wy the way ?
On top bar (the dynamic bar), clicking on "DEVIANTART" leads to the same place as if we clicked on "Browse" = duplicated function, loss of space for nothing (and confusing).
On top bar, enable us to disable unwanted buttons. Like "groups" or "forum" that lot of people will never use, and it wastes space. (seriously, who goes browsing all groups often ? Oo And space shouldn't be wasted)
On top bar, we need a visible button to always be able to access easily in ONE CLICK to our main/"home" page ! Currently Eclipse asks again to do a useless click which slows down navigation, and it's not intuitive. (by the way, the submit drop down menu doesn't needs clicking, why others needs ? XD)
The "Home" button should stand out, have a little logo, something to say "hey it's here your main page!". It would help a lot of people, and ease navigation.
At several places, no button to go to your gallery... anywhere in the top bar... there is only "DeviantArt" written and we can't even click on it to go somewhere. Especially when in "Notes".
When looking at the main page/profile of another deviant. When you scroll down, dynamic bar adapts. Not bad idea... but we need too to keep at least one icon to go back to our own main page in one click.
Dynamic top bar : why did you put the icon of notes on left and "feedback" on right, when when we browse our notifications (looking at our notes, watch or feedback) you put this order for them : Watch / Feedback / Notes. Notes are on the right side, Feedback on the left. It's illogical and leads to confusion. Put the note icon on the right !
Dynamic top bar : Accessing to feedback should have a direct link too, here again one needless clic needed.
-> See the splintered menu on very top of DA's pages in current DA ! (which shows your username, how many notices/deviations/Feedback/Notes you have and provides in same time quick links to them). It's a very good idea of what we need. And if we can now have this always accessible everywhere on pages thanks to the dynamic bar, that would be really nice !
Loss of the "Stick Menu" that you could activate in current DA through the settings menu (quoting the settings permitting to enable it : "A customizable menu bar that sticks to the navigation menu"). It was REALLY HANDY (being able to select the quick links we need, and to put them in the order we want). Please, bring it back ! And, if possible... make this a second dynamic bar ! Under the big one ! This would enable us to customize our own quick links and have them available everywhere, at any moment on DA. And for what quick links you should enable us to put inside... see the ones you can in the current DA This is REALLY NEEDED to improve and ease navigation on the whole site.. and would even solve some navigation issues !
In all the website, for everything : an incredible multiplication of needless clics and scrolling to simply do/see as much as in current DA.
Eclipse is... lacking a lot of -needed- indications. Lot of things aren't obvious or intuitive, everything is big for nothing, lot of space is wasted, we lack a lot of info (or they're hidden), you can't see things/infos in a glance, manage things in efficient and quick way, readability and navigability is worsened.
Pages are a lot slower to load compared to current DA. It asks for a lot more resources, and we can't all afford a decent computer :/
Endless scrolling lags and is heavily resource consuming. On desktop it's a real chore. And again, numerated pages helps SO MUCH for quick navigation & referencing (see the note section !). PLEASE permit us to disable endless scrolling everywhere in the whole site if we want. It's a real need.
Horizontal navigation is a chore and a real issue too. When you're in your gallery (for example), and that you have a lot of folders, it's such an hassle to find the one you want ! And when you're in the good one, if you've a lot of devs, endless scrolling LAGS and is a big issue if you have to come back several times at the middle of your folder who is at-the-very-bottom-of-your-screen-who-needs-to-load-lot-of-times-and-this-lags-and-asks-so-much-scrolling-and-means-hassle-especially-if-you-need-to-do-it-more-than-once. You get the idea ?
-> put folders on the side !...
->... And make less big icons ! and better fit things and better use the space !
We need to be able... . to drag and drop item(s) ! (look at current DA, it's infinitely better on a desktop compared to eclipse for managing things) To put them in our fav' folders for example.
Faving is now much more complicated and slow. We need being able to drag and drop like in current DA ! It was way easier and faster !
Square thumbs are ugly, takes too much space, crop drawings, cropping who is done in a very bad way, centering very badly the preview. This is really bad.
-> Makes thumbs/previews who adapts to the deviation, not the opposite ! Art should be emphasized, not destroyed/altered ! (and it helps when you see the whole deviation in the thumbs for an easy navigation, like in current DA)
[BUG] The scrollbar on the right of our web browser's window is sometimes "hidden" under the dynamic top bar, and so you can't use it to reach the top of the page.
On top bar, when you click on your avatar... "Extend Core" is badly placed, too close from "Settings" and "My Groups" ! It should be with the orders, points etc... Please put it near links we don't need regularly ! (And some of us use stash very regularly so stay away)
Feedback notification : not a bad idea to see all the latest feedback in this small window (by clicking on the bell), and who let you immediately watch or send a llama back... -> [Suggestion] but it would be even better to be able to delete the ones you want directly through this window thanks to a small button
-> [Suggestion] and it would be better to be see a preview of the comment when you move your mouse over "replied" or even the whole notification itself (or even create a small button who would open the comment in a new temporary window, permitting you to answer immediately to it without having to come back to your feedback center)
When searching, it's nice to see separated "sections" : journals, collections, etc..
1.Avatar's dropdown menu (click needed) 2.Feedback dropdown menu (click needed) 3.Submit menu (simply move your mouse over)
BROWSE AND CIE :
Still full of porn and fetishes. Put all of this in its own categories, but stop putting this in "popular" (= the frontpage of DA) !
No more "Popular in the last 8 hours" ? It was really useful to discover not known artists :/
Status published for everyone isn't appreciated at all : please enable us to have the choice to have status visible by everyone or only watchers. Privacy please.
Commission page is a good idea but needs improvements. And you should permit payments through paypal. It's only an advice Polls for everyone ! ... ... but it's not nice at all to not have the numbers of persons who voted for each choice (there is only % with Eclipse). In current DA, voting choices are automatically sorted in decreasing order of voting people, it helps a lot to see in a glance which one is the most voted one, the less voted one, etc..). Not anymore in Eclipse :/ -> [Suggestion] It would be nice to be able to sort the choices in increasing/decreasing number of votes when looking the results. (a button to press to automatically sort the results when you're watching them) Small note : links to polls aren't the same in current DA and in Eclipse. On current DA : www.deviantart.com/k-zlovetch/… With Eclipse : www.deviantart.com/k-zlovetch/… Switching mature content on/off is a lot easier to access.
-> The best would be to be able to differentiate Mature categories and to be able to filter them depending on our desire : "Moderate/strict mature" for the level, and the theme "Violence/Sexual/Nudity/Fetish/Political... ". A kind of "advanced" mature filter with several options. This would be awesome. Because, you already ask for this infos when we're submitting a deviation... and a lot of us would really appreciate to be able to filter things more precisely thanks to them !
-> When browsing deviations on DeviantArt mainpage, it would be great to be able to select several options at the same time in the drop-down menus to better filter the results. To be able to "tick" the ones we want. For example, for the categories, being able to tick the ones you want, let's say for example Digital and Traditional, this way you would see only Digital and Traditional results, and would avoid everything else... -> ... in the same idea, it would be nice to be able to select one or more categories in the dropdown menus to filter categories we don't want to see : for example, if I choose traditional, I will see everything but no traditional. -> The solution could be to have ticked boxes with an "invert what's ticked" option. [See the Notes section for inspiration : here you can tick the notes you want, or all, and you've got the option of "invert selection"] -> [by the way, this suggestions would be nice in the feedback section too to filter the feedback sections we would like to manage at the same time ] -> And this suggestion would be nice for the tags too ! Being able to select several and to prevent some others... -> Proper and real moderation. And a tit isn't offending. Lot of fetishes are, even if they aren't necessarily involving nude people.
Easy access to old status from a deviant !
Access to polls from devs we don't follow !
1.Browse page page 2.Example of Poll
Avatars and group "avatars" (rectangle avatar) aren't the same size all around the website with Eclipse : sometime very big, sometime lot smaller... Not having a standard size who won't change on the site will be a huge issue to do some kind of art (pixelart is the best example).
No more reason to buy a Core ? (no custom box, no sub folder), except for changing username or having more stash. What's the trap ?
When seeing the page of another deviant, you see if you watch him or not... but not anymore if he watches you ! This info was useful !
Coming "Back to the old DA" has always been felt as an intense relief.
Lovemeter : we're not adept at all. An algorithm tracking you to suggest you things, and most important, to avoid others ? And what a convenient and easy way to avoid doing proper moderation... Ability to like comments. Some pros, but lot of cons too. Meh.
On profiles, the "Posts" page is a good idea. Even if, again, huge thumbs and horizontal navigation ruin everything.
New code for DA !!!
This was a long review, which asked for a lot of work. More than 7 days.
Please understand that we said all of this not in an angry way, and not to bother you. We're saying all of this in peace, and we took the time to write them because we really care about DA, and unfortunately, we are very afraid of what we are seeing. But still, please, really, do not hate us.
The point isn't about whether or not we like the "style" of Eclipse -even if we find it bland and generic-, but about how enjoyable and efficient it is to use. And compared the current DA, it is really painful and only asks for so many useless additional actions for nothing, and so many wasted time. And deviations are often altered, and communication between artists/people is worsened.
We talked here only for desktop users of course, but in contrary to what you claim, we are a lot who are using desktops to do our main stuff in DA. And in current status, Eclipse is a real issue for us. Everything is detailed in the review, as much as possible.
By the way, you should listen to non-core too. Core are people who can regularly afford a 5$/month expense, and not everyone can afford this, even when working. Some non-Core people buy a core only several months a year. If they aren't core right now, you don't listen to their feedback ? Because it's how it feels for a lot of us. And for such an important change, we think everyone interested about DA's "life" should be able to be involved. Because if you really want that this place stay "open to everyone, artists and art lovers no matter their skill", well, you should listen to every categories of people who are on DA. Non-core are as important as core people if you want real diversity.
Of course, feel free to ask us if there is the need of further explanations (especially when things were badly explained).
We love this place, and, after 10 years here, we simply would like so much to stay here, and that all the other lovely deviants stay, because we have lovely friends here, and hope to meet more. It's a place where art is diverse, as much as the people doing/looking at it.
Diversity and deviousness are strengths We would like to do one last thing still : thanks to the staff who is taking the time to answer especially Moonbeam13 & danlev. It has been a long time since we saw that much answers. Only... it would be nice to see more answers to negative criticism who makes valid points Last edit of this journals : [07/12/2018] -> J1 IV ; [22/12/2018] J1 IV , J2 VII ;
[08/02/2019] : Since this review seems totally useless (staff doesn't take in account or even bother to answer to the kind of criticisms we raised here and that a lot of people share), we certainly won't try to update it anymore. Maybe sometime(s) we'll see. But whatever.
