Ah, hello there! I'm Kaba 👹
I am a UK-based neurodivergent artist, fluent in both digital and traditional form across a variety of mediums and styles. I am deeply passionate about traditional Japanese art forms, particularly ukiyo-e and sumi-e, and I specialise in reinterpreting these styles for contemporary audiences while honouring their historical roots.
I fell in love with traditional Japanese art at university, shortly after I went to see Katsushika Hokusai's exhibition in my home country. This led to a scholarship that took me to Japan, where I studied under a tutelage of the kindest, most understanding art teacher, who saw beauty in everything - even wobbly strokes. Especially wobbly strokes.
Though I mostly work digitally now (for accessibility and cost), the philosophy remains the same; the brushes just live in my computer. I still try to incorporate the traditional techniques - the soft ink washes, the careful use of negative space, the colours reminiscent of Edo period prints - while adding my own contemporary twist to it. It feels like bridging two worlds.
And speaking of bridging worlds - I'm also a DeviantArt Ambassador, which means I'm always around if you need help navigating things! The platform can be overwhelming sometimes (I know it was for me), so I'll do my best to make sure you feel safe and welcome here~
I'm fluent in three languages, so you can talk to me in whichever feels most comfortable 🦊
