Freedom by k1k0r0 Freedom by k1k0r0
On the poster in the drawing you can see the text: Spieln macht Frei (free translated: gaming sets you free), this is a variation of 'Arbeit macht Frei' a slogan the Germans used during wwII to 'motivate' their captives. It is used symbolically and in no way should be seen as a 'kudo' to the Holocaust.

with that cleared out of the way; The inspiration for this drawing comes from real life, my life. People I know do everyting to be 'free' and say they'll never be slaves of society, yet they find their freedom in computergames. This one day I was sitting there and it struck me, when something you do to feel free stops being something you choose and starts being a habit (addiction if you like) it becomes slavery. ah., the drawing speaks for itself.

The picture needed some touch ups because the original drawing which existed from two halfs shifted during the scanning process.

Het geeft echt het perfecte typische weer.
En het duits geeft het net die extra lading.
Daar gaat mijn droom van GamingKanselier.
Prachtig.

Like a slave to the machine right? Brilliant concept! The idea of the ball & chains at the ankle is fabulous. And the gamer's facial ecpression is awesome, it's like he's totally spellbound by the screen. Again, brilliant concept!

well the idea about human conventions creating these addictions. Computer games, and computers in general, are addictive and to feed the habit we always go back to them. Computers consume our lives, eat away time before our eyes, and at the end of the day we reflect on them and think how we wasted our time on a pointless square box.
And in a sense, we become prisoners to Bill gates and his Microsoft empire.

Apart from the idea behind it, the picture is visually great. The use of symbolic signifiers makes the meaning more clear, i.e the weight chained to his leg.

My only suggestions are the perspective ( where the TV sits), and you also might want to refine the comic by adding tonal variations. My only other concern is the composition, i feel its a bit unbalanced. Maybe if this was refined more you could home on and elborate the concept of computer games being a product social aleination.

I can't say I've really given it much thought before, but what you say is very, very true. I personally find that video games can be liberating, helping me relax and take my mind of things...escapism if you will. But like anything if taken too far can be a bad thing. I like the sketchiness of the drawing but I think it might help to tighten it just a bit. I like the crazed expression and the ball and chains, I think the strong symbolism helps drive your point in.
