Apparently the white ink tattoos started gaining momentum in 2008 (most likely due to the constant spotlight on miss Lohan).
So what do they look like?

Though the white ink used for all white tattoos is a little different in formulation (basically, more pigment) from the typical white mixing ink, it still isn't 100% opaque. They are less prominent and tend to fade a little into the skin. The most frequent description is that they look like a scar, in that it's a faint discoloration of the skin. On darker skin tones, the aged tattoo is said to look like a "ghostly shadow" which, to me, translates to "faint scar." White Tattoos look best on lighter skin tones and part of their aftercare involves limited exposure to sunlight and occasional touchup.
White ink tattoos are not to be confused with Chameleon ink. They do not glow in the dark and are not marketed as black light reactive.
Why get a White Tattoo?
Please don't do it because it's getting popular. I think part of the appeal is that they are less noticeable. White ink can be a solution if you strongly desire a tattoo but your work environment does not lend itself well to noticeable body art. However, these White Ink Tats are much harder to remove. Be sure it's something that you really want!
It might take a while to find an artist near you who will do a white ink tattoo. This may be for a couple reasons. First of all, it takes a very experienced tattooist to get a good, even application because the ink is so hard to see in a fresh tattoo. Second, even if everything goes well, a number of factors in the healing process could affect the finished tattoo. The ink could yellow or heal practically transparent. The skin could heal raised so that the tattoo looks like a brand. I guess what I'm getting at is that because this is such a new thing, they are still a bit unpredictable. If you're really digging the white ink, please do your research!
