Bob Dylan - Drawing Animation by justinsdrawings Bob Dylan - Drawing Animation by justinsdrawings
Animated stages of my Bob Dylan drawing.

I specifically finished the mustache last so I could watch it pop on there at the very end.

do you do a base layer of graphite before charcoal pencils Justin? Im trying out charcoal now that Ive gave up  trying for those contrasts with graphite, however Im plagued by the little white flecks throughout my charcoal shading.

Yep, I do a failry detailed graphite sketch with shading first. Then I pick out the dark areas and color them in with charcoal. After that you can get a pretty good idea of how to shade the mid tones.

I don't usually get a lot of white flecks, but I usually pick them out or go over areas several times with charcoal to get a smooth texture.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Justin! it does help! Are your mid tones done with graphite or charcoal, i.e the skin tones?

Yeah, the mid tones are mostly layers of graphite. You can also go over the top with charcoal to get some darker, smoother effects.

lol haha I guess we're both studying then hahaha. A great method though! Going from light to dark. It must take some time don't it?

Actually, the light-to-dark goes pretty fast. It's the little finishing details I get hung up on for months, lol.

Thanks. It seems like I have to discover the process all over again each time I start a new drawing.
