Underneath the Veil

You know what you've got when you know what you've given to the silence...
when there's nowhere else to go but underneath the veil...

… and this was a treat. It was just one of these surprises that awaits you just around the corner when your mind is set to something else, some other destination, some other aim. Take it metaphorically or literally but don’t tell me it has never happened to you before.

April 15, the second morning of Easter vacation and we were heading for one of my photography companion's favorite bridges. We were already behind schedule and anxious to get there before the sun was too high, lifting the mist we hoped it’d be there and washing everything out when suddenly, just around a corner, this view unfolded in front of us. Now, being the gentleman that he is, K. never forgets to point out every once in a while that if I happen to see anything that I want to stop and shoot I shouldn’t hesitate (I have serious doubts if that relates to him being a gentleman or him being afraid of the non-stop whining that could follow, but anyway...) so I decided to make full use of this advantage. I’m under the impression that the car was already braking even before I uttered “Look!” and anyway I’m not sure if that “look” made much sense uttered with my mouth hanging wide open.

We shot out of the car and tried to set our cameras up as fast as we could. Well, “fast” is a word that I generally don’t like. I am slow. You can translate this anyway you want to and still not be very far from the truth but that is absolutely true when it comes to photography. I like to be in a place well ahead of the right time, explore, try different exposures, fool around without the pressure of “shoot now or forever lose the light”. This was not the case there and I only had time for 2 exposures before my companion, being the gentleman that he is, told me very politely to move my @&$# cause we were already late!

I tried to make a point by sulking the rest of the way, mumbling that I should have stayed there but even then I knew he was right… A few minutes later the sun would be too high, completely lifting the thin veil of mist and all the magic would go with it.

A couple of hours later, on our way back, he pointed at this spot to me again and I just couldn’t recognize it. It looked so plain and uninteresting…

Hope you enjoy your visit here!

PS This one is dedicated to AndyMumford, a great photographer, a great source of inspiration and a great example all of this time :thanks:

I still remember the first time I saw this photo. I was, and still am, blown away. 4 plus years later and I still remember your words. They have helped me on numerous occasions to stop and take the photo right then, don't worry about anything, just get it or it will be gone forever. You can never recreate the photos you take, no matter how many times you go back to the exact same spot on the same day and time, something will always be different. Seize the moment when it presents itself to you. Love, always my friend.

Amazing picture! Magnificent!
I would normally go into a lengthy description of what I'm thinking about it and how can it be improved, but for this one I have no words... just perfect!
