The pounding of hooves and the rushing of the wind was deafening and not too long after Yan and May had left the courtyard they and the horses were drenched in mud up to the saddlepad.
Yan and Craftie had a headstart from about three horse's lengths but Leitha was already catching up, her strides mighty and growing ever wider as they entered the forest.
After a few more strides they had caught up to the man and his stallion and took the next obstacle shoulder to shoulder with them. Another stride, another breath and a surprised shout from Yan and the daughter had overtaken her father, hurtling off back towards the stable buildings. May turned half around in the saddle and yelled back over her shoulder: "You better shake a leg, you know. The devil takes the hindmost!!"
