Erin and Diego jumped from their seats and hurried outside. The fire already spread to the stable. The horses screamed and neighed inside for fear of the fire and kicked against the wooden walls of the stalls. Diego opened the stalls that were the closest to the stable gate and chased the foals outside. He yelled across the courtyard: “Secure the foals and call the fire-brigade!” Then he ran back into the afire building. Erin already struggled with Craftie in the stable aisle and May ran with Sommer towards the gate. The only horse left was Hekatè. She was rearing in her stall but finally Diego could manage to attach the lead rope to her halter and pull her away from the burning wood. The mare screamed and reared again. Panicked as she was from the roaring fire she accidentally hit Diego with her hooves on head and arm. Suddenly one of the huge wooden balks burst with a terrible noise and crashed on the floor directly behind the mare’s legs. She jumped forward and finally Diego could lead her out on the courtyard ignoring the pain throbbing through his head. The blue lights of the fire brigade flashed over the buildings and the siren echoed painfully in his ears. Suddenly there were people everywhere, voices yelling orders. Diego took a deep breath trying to abort the felling of dizziness that made the world spin before his eyes. He saw Erin walking in his direction. She took Hekatè’s lead rope mumbling: “Come on, girl. We’re going to wait for the vet over there.” The huge black mare was panting heavily; her fur was wet with sweat. “Diego, are you all right?” Her eyes were full of worry caused by the paleness in his face. She stroke through his hair and felt something viscid on her fingers. “You’re bleeding.” Her brother nodded wearily and pointed towards Hekatè with his chin. “She got a little afraid.” Erin lifted an eyebrow: “A little…?” Diego smiled weakly and shrugged. “I think I need to sit down somewhere or you have to carry me to the pasture.” Erin shook her head but laid her brother’s arm around her shoulders and led him and the mare over to May who stood with the other horses on the pasture waiting for the vet to arrive.
