Hope's Peak Academy is home to Japan's best and brightest high school students — the beacons of hope for the future. But that hope suddenly dies when Makoto Naegi and his classmates find themselves imprisoned in the school, cut off from the outside world and subject to the whims of a strange, murderous little bear named Monokuma. He pits the students against each other, promising freedom to anyone who can murder a fellow classmate and get away with it. It's up to you to find out who Monokuma really is, and why you've been taken from the world you once knew. Hajime Hinata's point of view as he starts his first year at Hope's Peak Academy. As he walks into the school building, he is overcome with fatigue; when he recovers, he finds himself in front of a door. He has a strong urge to open it, and once he does, he finds himself in a classroom full of his new classmates.

They suddenly find themselves locked in the classroom, and a pink bunny, Usami, appears before them, claiming herself to be the class' teacher. The classroom around them soon falls away to reveal a paradise-like island. Usami tells them that they are on a school trip and that they are to befriend each other to gain Hope Fragments and make their hope grow.

Just as they get used to the peaceful island life, Monokuma appears and takes control of the island, announcing that the students must participate in a life of mutual killing if they wish to escape. GOODBYE DESPAIR 

Via the Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History, Super High School Level Despair has driven the former world to destruction. In order to save this despair-soaked world, the Future Foundation was formed.

Makoto and his fellow Class 78th classmates, having defeated Junko Enoshima, have joined the Future Foundation. There they are working to rebuild the world, but Makoto has been charged with the crime of treason for protecting the Remnants of Despair. Everyone who gathered for Makoto's trial has been trapped and thrust into the “Final Killing Game” by Monokuma. Everyone is fitted with a strange bracelet that releases a sleeping potion at a fixed time. While asleep, the traitor in their midst kills a Future Foundation member. To survive, they'll have to ferret out the traitor and stop the killing.

The class trial rules do not apply to this killing game. Makoto and the others have been driven into a desperate kill or be killed situation.

"Komaru Naegi, Makoto Naegi’s little sister, has been imprisoned inside a mysterious apartment for over a year. One day, she is rescued by Byakuya Togami of Future Foundation, but the rescue is derailed by a sudden onslaught of hundreds of Monokumas. Komaru soon discovers that the city has been taken over by a group of children calling themselves the Warriors of Hope. Their leader, Monaca, declares that the city will be the site of a “children's paradise,” and to accomplish this, all the adults will be exterminated. Komaru teams up with Toko Fukawa to try to survive the rampaging Monokumas, escape the crafty Monokuma Kids, and uncover the secrets of the city." ULTRA DESPAIR GIRLS.

On the train, Helen slips in her emotion and tells John he's going to be killed. John stops and reverses the train, heading back to New York. Resistance still blows up the portal, but the American Reich captures them after. San Francisco is still bombed, the American Reich still invades the west.

Childan never makes it to the boat. His last scene is him walking through his bombed shop, realizing the hopelessness of the world he lives in.

The last scene of the series is Juliana and Wyatt being executed in a large and very public ceremony showing the end of the resistance.
