Xanth: Luck of the Draw by juliedillon Xanth: Luck of the Draw by juliedillon
This my first official cover art, for the next book in Piers Anthony's Xanth series, Luck of the Draw, which will be released December 2012.

Iíve been a little anxious about this, since I am stepping in for the wonderful Darrell Sweet, who unfortunately died last December. He was an amazing artist with a long career of fantastic and iconic covers, and I hope I can do him and fans of the Xanth series justice.

I just saw this book in the store today, and all I could think was "This looks like the style that Julie Dillon on dA does" and lo and behold a quick search of the book finds it to be so. Great job!

Xanth books were the first fantasy novel I ever read.

Wow, did not know about Darrell Sweet. How sad. I honest found a difference in the cover art, however, it looked damn close enough to be considered a new style of Mr. Sweet's. I find your first effort fantastic!

You did do the Xanth series justice!! I was immediately reminded of that style of dragons and coloring, and lo! You're emulating him. Congrats on the hire!

This is beautiful. Do you still use the hardlight layer after your greyscale one?
juliedillon Featured By Owner Sep 12, 2012
Yep, every time. :)
metalgearray09 Featured By Owner Sep 12, 2012
oh wow! do you do multiple layers of it? Every time I try the color comes in super saturated and bright. Should I try a multiply layer over it to darken the shadows and such? Thank you!
juliedillon Featured By Owner Sep 12, 2012
The hard light layer is just one way to add color to the sketch, like an underpainting; it's not going to look finalized just from the one layer, you have to paint more on top of it. What works for me may not work for everyone, it's just the method that I use :/
metalgearray09 Featured By Owner Sep 12, 2012
oh hrrm well I'll keep experimenting. Your colors are just so vivid without looking super saturated and still retains alot of value from the underpaintings.

Wow, Piers Anthony is still going at it with Xanth? Damn, I remember reading all those books as a kid, the covers always sucked me in, in fact I consider them to be one of my biggest influences artistically growing up. Congrats to you and your amazing skills. I'm sure Darrell Sweet would be proud to have you as his successor.

How.. how can this not have any comments on it yet? Is my dA broken?

This is a great piece and very much in the line of the previous Xanth covers. I think you did a fantastic job.
juliedillon Featured By Owner Sep 4, 2012
I had the comments on my gallery disabled for several months, but decided to try turning them back on. This just happened to have been posted while comments were still disabled is all. :)

And thank you! I'm really glad you like this :)

Ohh I see! I was going to say there is NO WAY this would not have gotten comments when it was posted :D
