Well, for a day. I mean, what is left of the day. I might buy it sometime but I don't need it at the moment. But loot at this neat journal skin! Oh my god!

Anyway. Happy birthday dA ^_^

Miyuki's Birthday

Yeah I didn't done a lot on Zarmina (damn you procrastination + 40h/week internship), but I thought a lot on the storyboard.

So we're in the future. In the year 4F43, to be precise. (Yeah, they use hexadecimal.) A future, with all the sci-fi stuff we expect to have in the future, but pretty steampunkish, as in, well, it's still pretty much medieval times. Yup, medieval times with future technology and magic.

So yeah, the story starts in a remote village, in a remote shack on a remote farm in the night side of Zarmina, nothing really extraordinary. It's Miyuki's 192nd birthday (note that a year there is 10 times shorter), all her family are there and her friends too, even the priest of the place.

Suddently, while doing some magic incantation because it's required for a 192nd birthday, both the priest and Miyuki have a revelation (most likely because of a radio signal the Earth sent in 2009 interfering with the magic), they see messages from the Earth, humans, stuff like that. They now have proof of extrazarminian life. So the priest makes Miyuki a knight (before the eyes of her conservative and traditionalist parents who don't even accept anything of what's happening, note that the job of being knight is pretty much male-only) and sends her on a quest to discover the meaning of all of this.

After much walking, Miyuki discovers the Romano Fafard, a spaceship that directly came from Canada. (Yeah, I'm a big fan of Dans une Galaxie près de chez vous.)

The population of Zarmina

Since the planet is stuck in eternal winter, they're most likely furries. Maybe even with tails and cat ears. Probably not cat ears, but that would be cute. As for tails and fur, I guess it would be legit because at one point of the evolution humans had fur and tails, it's like a what if humans didn't lost them with time. They still would have clothes though.

Anyway I just found Charas, a nice tool to generate RPG Maker sprites (it's what DJ Omnimaga uses to make most of his sprites), I think I already found Miyuki's haircut with it. Fun. Note that the game won't be made in RPG Maker, but in LÖVE, but it supports RPG Maker-format sprites.

Also I have some start of a plot I think. What about a radio message sent by the Earth in 2009 to the Gliese 581 system, in 2029 some astronomer on Zarmina would receive it with their advanced technology (because Zarmina are great astronomers and are technologically advanced compared to the Earth while still being kinda feodal-looking, resulting in something kinda steampunk), and something would happen as they receive it. Note that they already discovered the Earth since a while and identified it as a probable habitable planet, much like when the Earth discovered Zarmina in 2010. Miyuki would probably be some adventurer who got randomly affected with some side effect of said signal, then searches for clues about what the hell this means, eventually stumbling upon the scientist who received the unnatural radio message, then they try to decode it, hoping to find about the meaning of life and stuff like that. Obviously, lots of magic, space traveling and other miscellaneous shenanigans.

I guess the above paragraph can be improved a lot. The engine I'm working on as well. I came up with a cool flashlight effect, you can check it out here.

Kinda fitting for a Zarminian. Deep snow. Or even, Miyukiko, child of the deep snow.

The characters of Zarmina will have japanese names. Because why not. And also the fact the game will kinda be based on japanese games, from mechanics to drawings. Yeah, it'll be kinda manga/visual novel-ish.

For the dialogues, I thought of something akin to the Touhou series or your average visual novel, you see the text scrolling at the bottom (like every good game), but also you see the mugshots of the characters speaking (which will, as said before, manga-style), the one speaking being highlighted and the state of the game before triggering the dialogue as the background.

If you played the Alterniabound panels of Homestuck, I think you'll know what I'm talking about. But more Final Fantasy-ish.

Anyway, for now, I think you can consider Miyuki canon.

Zarmina (idea for a new fantasy world)

And I got lost on Wikipedia, once again, and I stumbled on this.

Habitability of red dwarf systems

And I fell in love with the idea. A story (manga and/or RPG) set on a planet with a red dwarf (or even a brown dwarf the size of Jupiter) as a sun, tidal locked to it (meaning the concept of day and night would not exist, much like how our Moon is tidal locked to the Earth), with a 6 Earth day-long year, the orbit being very close (0.03 UA) of the sun and being nearly as big as the sun, while still being pretty small.

Maybe I should develop something based on this, that would be interesting.

Zarmina. The planet will most likely be based on this. It's orbiting a red dwarf and is nearly as big as the sun. Plus I love the name. Also the data would be scientifically accurate (even inventing scientifically possible stuff for the unknowns, such as it's always winter with snow and stuff, most likely below -30C), but with a whole load of fantasy thrown in (such as the fact the alien race inhabiting the planet will most likely be humanoids). One thing that would be interesting to exploit is the tidal lock, which means the day/night cycle will no longer be dependent on time, but on the location.

Edit: Read it all here: Zarmina: Around the Red Dwarf Sun
About 20 light-years away from the Earth, orbiting at about 0.15 AU from a red dwarf sun, there is a planet called Zarmina. It is about 3-4 times the size of the Earth, while its sun is about 3 times smaller than ours. It's kinda a small solar system, as most of the 6 planets are inside a 0.2 AU radius and are bigger than the Earth, so you can clearly see them from Zarmina. An interesting thing about Zarmina is that the planet is tidal locked, meaning it's always showing the same face to its sun, so there's a side it's always day and the other, always night. The year is about 36.5 earth day long and there's no concept of day as it takes the same time to rotate around once, hence tidal locking. The temperature there is from about -40°C to -10°C, so it's pretty much always winter, no concept of seasons as we know of otherwise, as there's no tilt like there's one of about 23° on Earth, and the atmosphere, very Earth-like, is just powerful enough to relay heat to the dark si

Now for the humanoids that inhabits the planet and the main characters, I still have no idea yet. This is an attempt at drawing manga by juju2143 will probably be a Zarminian, as most of the OCs (original characters) I'll probably come up with (or borrow) next. Exploiting the night side and it's lack of sun (it got stolen or something) would probably be interesting.
