”You do you”

Haunting words.

You tell me to be myself, yet you have no idea who I am.

“You do you”

You see me every week, every day, in every class, but you don’t see me.

Through a series of brief moments of interaction, you cast on me the idea of “me” that you have created for your own satisfaction.

“You do you”

It is an empty gesture of acceptance.

“You do you”

The me that you claim to know is the one that I want you to know.

I behave the way I'm expected to do, politely making small talk where small talk is due.

“You do you”

If I do me, what will happen then? Will you welcome me for what I am? Will you help me carry my inner burdens and fight my demons?

I act this way because I'm aware that something is off. I know that not everything is the way it is supposed to be, but all I can do about it is cover it up.

The “me” that you know is the one I wish I could be. I want to be the happy and upbeat person you so believe me to be.

And to you and the rest of the world outside, for all intents and purposes, that is who I am, but behind the smile lies stress and despair.

The inability to achieve any of my goals, no matter the size or importance, weighs me down and traps me, in both mind and body.

But I will fight it.

Fake it till you make it.

Do you know those words?

Don’t tell me to “do me”.

Do you want “me” to disappear?

I don’t.

I want to become “me”.

So don’t tell me to “do me”.

Please.
