With how little we know of the Waynes' murder in Crime Alley, is it possible they were struck down by the Clown Prince of Crime himself?

It is possible but it was one of the worst aspects of 89 so why would you do want him to be the killer? There is a problem in that they are too close age wise and that the thug we see is a tad older. While the flashback could not be accurate the superman ones uses people Clark knew or combinations of existing ones so it is unlikely that Bruce would misrember that.
Plus if he were the Joker then Bruce would recognize him or Joker would say so in Return of the Joker

Yeah, it's pretty much definitely supposed to be Joe Chill / a nameless thug in the DCAU, but still a fun theory.

It's too convenient for storytellers for me, and sort of takes away the randomness of the act that drove Bruce to become Batman.  Just "some criminal guy" is better because it allows Bruce to focus on crime in general.  If it's the Joker, you got a revenge tale that makes Joker more important than say the Riddler and what not.  So I'd prefer it if it's a no.

I agree completely! It's interesting that in the DCAU it's MAYYYYYBE possible it was the Joker, but definitely way more likely Joe Chill/a nameless thug.
