The Caves of Steel by jrmalone The Caves of Steel by jrmalone
"...Earthmen are so coddled, so enwombed in their imprisoning caves of steel, that they are caught forever." - Isaac Asimov, The Caves of Steel

This is a tribute to one of my all-time favorite stories, The Caves of Steel, by one of my all-time favorite authors, the master of Science Fiction, Isaac Asimov. I have him to thank for founding my love for all things sci-fi. As a child I devoured this and nearly every one of his books. I'm especially fond of the robot mystery novels (this one being the first), and what an added treat that he bridged them with the Foundation series.

I hope my fellow Asimov friends will like this. I've been working on this and several close-up images of the characters (Baley and Daneel) on the side for a while now. It's been so much fun! This piece took several stages, and because of the complexity and overhead I had to render in two separate scenes, then merged together in the final render.

The characters were created in Poser. The city was created in Vue using about 25,000 greebles. I went a little crazy! I also used some of Björn's :iconariel-x: greebles and objects, most notably his "Hello Kitty Space Tunnel"! LOL! :) Fun!!!

This is so deeply intriguing I was driven to buy the book moments ago.   If this is one of your all-time favorite stories I'm confident I'll love it as well.  I always loved greebles but I've never seen them used so beautifully.

I loved this book very much, and Asimov too. Though this cave of steel looks alarmingly like a borg hive

It does indeed look like a Borg hive, but a cave of steel nonetheless. ;) Appreciate the feedback!

How much RAM are you paking? Did you have to set up each of the lights individually? Man that is allot of lights.

I'm maxed on this quad-core machine at 16GB. I found that the RAM helps with scene setup greatly, but I punish the Hell out of my CPUs. ;) Yeah, this scene had a ton of lights. I did this scene in two stages: the city was one scene first (with the shit-ton of lights lol) and then the characters and that platform in another scene, using the previous city scene as a backdrop image in Vue. That helps tremendously with cutting down overhead, I've found, especially when characters are involved.

I'm actually in the process of doing the same thing as I wanted to an image that looked like one of yours. Good to know it's a common technique.

Thanks again, bud! :) Yes, I love Asimov! He's my all-time favorite! If time permits, I would like to make some fan images of the other robot books and maybe some Foundation-inspired scenes. I really love the universe Asimov created.

Glad to know there are other Asimov fans here at DA! :)

jrmalone, I really hope you DO make some more fan images, especially of Daneel, Giskard and Elijah!
Re your artwork at top - how COULD humans sink so low as to live underground in such a hell-hole....brilliant piece of work, especially with the (elegant) silhouetted figures of Daneel and Elijah looking out at my idea of hell in earth.
I'm a HUGE Asimov fan, especially of D,G and E in the Robot Novels.

Aww, thank you so much! :) I agree -- as much as I love The Caves of Steel as a book, it really is quite a hellish scenario, but one that could quite possibly be a reality one day. I love the idea that one man (Baley) unintentionally kick-started the revolution to expand humanity to the stars and leave those "wombs" of cities on Earth. It's brilliant!

I will definitely work on some more fan art, and pull out my rendition of Daneel and Baley and give them a makeover. It's exciting!

So glad you liked this piece, and glad to talk to another Asimov fan(atic!) :P

cool :D Sir Isaac for me be a great mind and human, he giver to us a great legacy of filosophy and creativity, I'm glad found here people who's like her work. he remembered a scene of episode two of star wars, during one of the first scenes in " Curusant " of the movie they recreated the first scene of Foundation and Empire when the flying cars were entering avenues constructed in the middle of buildings, Sir Isaac went forward to his time jajajajajajaj

Thanks! Yes, I have about 30 variations from beginning to this final scene - but that's typical of me. The image in my mind rarely translates to the digital image, so I just keep at different angles and aspects, and voila. ;) I don't mind it though. It's all fun! :)

:) Thanks Lance! I have to re-read some of them, like the Robot series and the Foundation, every so often. They're always as good as the first time, to me. ;) I'm working on another fan piece with the two main characters from these Robot mysteries. They're eluding me, though. Tough to get them just right... ;)

Thanks so much for the compliment! :) Yes, I made it all in Vue - my favorite renderer! :) I'll send you a note since there's not much room here in the comment. It's not so hard - just a bit tedious. Hopefully you have the EcoPainter module - that was the key to making the city. Give me just a little time and I will send to you. ;)

Your images are awesome! :)

Cheers Bro! ;)
