József Sváb was born in 1963. He has enjoyed reading adventure fiction since his childhood and through this he came to find the comic books published in the magazines “Pajtás”, “Füles” and “Magyar Ifjúság” popular at the time. He was still in his youth when he first experimented with the adaptation of his favourite readings. During his secondary school years he further developed his draughtsmanship and knowledge of drawing; however it was the college years that gave him the final push in the directions of drawing comics. He participated in the activities and exhibitions of the Kísérleti Képregény Stúdió (Experimental Comic Studio), a group that was founded by Sándor Kertész. He started to create illustrations for the “Galaktika” sci-fi magazine around this time. He was also attracted to animation; his dissertation work was completed in this subject in 1987 at the Bessenyei György Tanárképző Főiskola (Teachers’ Training College) in Nyíregyháza. He acquired the knowledge and skills for creating western style comics during the comic courses organised with the participation of Italian experts in Gödöllő and Nyíregyháza. Following a short period of working as an art teacher he became a colleague of the Italian-Hungarian publisher Línea in 1989, his drawings and articles were published in its publications. He was the one to draw the stories of the eponymous character of “Krampusz” magazine. In addition to his graphic work he was also involved with editing the publication. Following the closure of the publisher, he continued working as a graphic artist, and then founded his own company. His book, Képregényiskola (Comic School) was published in 1992, the idea of which originated from his series of articles published in the “Menő Manó” magazine. At present this is the only book published in the Hungarian language that deals with the subject area of comic drawing. In recent years, he has also been designing and creating book covers, and illustrating a variety of books for different publishers


Sváb József 1963-ban született. Gyermekkora óta kedveli a kalandos olvasmányokat, ezeken keresztül jutott el az akkoriban a Pajtásban, a Fülesben és a Magyar Ifjúságban megjelenő képregényekhez. Már fiatalon próbálkozott kedvenc olvasmányainak feldolgozásával. Gimnazista korában fejlesztette a rajztudását, de a főiskolás évek adták meg a végső lökést a képregényrajzolás irányába. Részt vett a Kertész Sándor alapította csoport, a Kísérleti Képregény Stúdió tevékenységében, tárlatain. Ekkoriban kezdett el illusztrációkat készíteni a Galaktika sci-fi magazin számára. Vonzódott az animáció iránt is, diplomamunkáját ebben a témában készítette 1987-ben, a nyíregyházi Bessenyei György Tanárképző Főiskolán. Az olasz szakemberek részvételével szervezett gödöllői, majd nyíregyházi képregénytáborok révén sajátította el a nyugati stílusú képregény készítésének ismeretanyagát. Rövid rajztanári működés után 1989-ben a Línea olasz-magyar kiadó munkatársa lett, ennek a kiadványaiban jelentek meg rajzai, cikkei. A Krampusz című magazin névadó figurájának történeteit is ő rajzolta. Később a grafikusi munka mellett már szerkesztői feladatokat is ellátott. A kiadó megszűnése után alkalmazott grafikusként dolgozott, majd saját céget alapított. 1992-ben jelent meg Képregényiskola című kötete, amelyhez az ötletet a Menő Manó magazinban közölt cikksorozata adta. Jelenleg ez az egyetlen magyar nyelven megjelent könyv, ami a képregényrajzolás témakörével foglalkozik. Az elmúlt években kissé eltávolodott a képregénytől, könyvborítókat és illusztrációkat készített különböző kiadók részére.
