I have been sharing progress images on my Instagram account (@j.stolarz) over the last several weeks from my latest commission. I am excited to finally share with you the completed map of the Scottish Marches, a map set in 15th century Scotland, which also contains several fantasy elements.
I had a lot of fun researching and of course drawing this map, and am very happy with how it turned out. I think my favorite part was researching Smailholm Tower and trying to determine what it may have looked like in the 15th century as only the tower now stands today. But while this was a very enjoyable element, I find that fantasy style maps of real world locations are always the most challenging. It really causes you to appreciate the art and work of cartographers throughout history who drew their maps without the aid of modern tools like Google Earth or drone footage on YouTube *wink*
