Trouble in Big Book City

As with every advance in technology, something falls out of use. In this case it is the Publishing and Book Selling industry that is taking a hit as a result of the acceleration e-book popularity fueled by the success of the tablet computer. I've picked on Apple here a bit as they can be credited with defining and completely dominating the tablet market in its current form (to the tune of 95% market share apparently).

For those abroad, here in Australia we have recently seen the demise of our largest book selling chains. Globally, Borders Group hasn't made a profit since 2006. The double hit of economic troubles with the success of e-Books seems to have be a killing blow.

Personally, I don't care how I read my books, but what is sad is that even with adapting to e-books, publishing is becoming much less profitable meaning less mainstream authors are getting in to the market.
