Lusitanie, Blog Portugal
If you want to discover this country, it is the good place to go, but it's in french (don"t worry, it has lot of photographs...).

This is what I'm doing now. I know, it was a lot of time since I've posted at dA, life, you know...

But I'll come back someday, whith the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Someday.

It was a very long year, still crossing the artistic desert for now. I'll post something in my scraps about the 10 sketches games sometime, I've some sketchs "already" done.

picked from :iconwalteuch: journal

The first 10 deviants who leave a comment on this journal (telling you partipate to the game) get a free sketch.

After commenting, send me a note or a comment on this journal saying what you want. You can request any sketch you like and I'll do it (well, I'll try ). But you're supposed to do the same in your journal.
(NB : please don't ask me for crazy details or overpopulated pics, I know myself well and there's a chance that I overdo it anyway XD)

I'll try to do it. Please note that I'm completely booked, don't ask for crazy things... and I'll give some news from me. Soon. When I'll finish my new flat. Someday.
Some news from me, if you care.

I found a job, as you may know. It's great, I'm enjoying each day coding xhtml and other things like doing the coffee, yeah n.n

So I moved, and I currently live into my aunt's house. She don't have the Internet.

...

Damn.

I also don't have a computer.

Damn.

Yeah, I'm writing this at work n__n

So I think I only will give some news when I'll have internet again at my own home, somewhere before Christmas v__v don't forget about me ;_;

I'll try to draw whenever I can in the meantime and reply to everybody, I only have 275 deviations to look at  xD;;

Another positive thing, is that soon, I'll have a good Wacom Intuos, at last!! And a good computer too (my boss is giving me one brand new, thank you boss). I'm full of ideas =)

What I love the most about all this, is that every week end, I'm with my friends o/ thanks you all. It's just so motivating to draw with all of you :)

Everything is in the title of my journal =D

I will move definitively to Paris in the beginning of July o/ (wow, it's in two weeks from now o_O ). I will do webdev, seo, and stuff like that (okay, a job for an internet geek) :)

I just came from a short trip to Paris where I spoke to my future boss, and I went after that to a japanese restaurant with:

:iconpuchi-ko: :iconmirkaos: :iconseshiria: :icongokenkhren: :icontea-citron-caramel:

I think I'm going to live nearby to this small restaurant where they serve huuuge ramens :XD: It was really cool to meet everybody =D

Anxiety

Tue May 2, 2006, 5:32 AM
logo Jori

Ok let's do this. I'll try to post something in my journal.

I'm not so well, these last days.

Some months ago, I went to the hospital (in an ambulance...), not knowing what I had. It seemed to have been an anxiety crisis. At that time, I simply thought it was nothing more than a lack of water in my body due to a 5 kms run I did the day before...

But it was strange that the doctor gave to me painkillers (or anodyne, don't know what is the best word in my dictionnary).

Two months ago, I went to the hospital (this time by myself) I felt something similar to what hapenned to me before. It was the fear of beeing sick again. This time the doctor gave me others anodynes, to relax myself and to get some sleep:

I'm stressed, anxious. It passed some days after, but now, in this precise moment, it's starting again (4 or 5 days ago), but in another form: it's like a permanent anxiety, fear.

And why? Because of stupid things, I have too high expectations of myself, and when I can't get what I want, and if it seems subconsciently that it's impossible, I get that  way. It's terrible, I can't put myself together to do something. (yeah believe me, when you work like crazy in an illustration, this is too much stressfull, I really have to think illustration in another way, for instance).

I know what I need: a job in Paris. But the more I search, the more difficult it seems to me to get this. My departure is already programmed (final of june) and maybe it's because of that that I feel that way.

It's irrational. And I don't feel good, nervous, anxious, I can't even reply to my e-mails or stay at the same place (sorry funk, I will reply to your marvellous email somehow). And what it's worse, it's knowing that this feeling is not useful, it does nothing more than arm myself, to complicate even more.

>_< I'll get over it, somehow, I have more to do to crawl in anxiety right now!!

too much pride IS a bad thing

CG Challenge

Thu Apr 6, 2006, 4:29 PM

Many of you already know this: I'm participating in the CG Challenge, from CG Society. After I've read their FAQ, I learned that I could ask for feedback also elsewhere, so... here's my thread in there:

forums.cgsociety.org/showthrea…

CG challenge

What do you think of it so far? I've changed a lot of things since last poll, and as you can see, I choose a square ratio instead :XD:

I'm wondering if is it okay if I upload from time to time my wips also in dA, to my scraps section, or is it best to write a new journal per week with the news about the challenge? Of course, if you're on CGsociety, you could comment me there, I'll comment you back (it may say there that I'm a member since january 2003, but I'm a real noob, since I didn't stick there, prefering dA at that time :D ).

Aniway, why do I have another journal, after all those polls, journals, whining and complaining? I've been tagged. Yeah, again. By two evil different girls (but still evil) :iconlightkataomi: and :iconshinidanie:
But I'm a rebell, and I won't answer 12 different weird things about me, no no,  just 6 more (I've already said 6 before, as you may know <.< ... ).

So here's the tag, I won't tag anyone this time, I'm still waiting for the others I tagged last time XD :

1: I like any kind of music, from visual rock to j-pop, to classical music, rap or hard rock. I'm listening to D'espairsRay right now, by the way.

2: I like to talk a lot, but if the talking doesn't interess me, I will say absolutely nothing. It can surprise some people, because I was quiet all nigth, and suddendly I'm really talkative (oooh your friend is shy... no is just bored, he don't like the last time you went shopping) or (omg your friend doesn't shut up, I know everything about the last evangelion by Judas thanks to him @_@)

3: I have never worked in my life. Not in a traditional way (with a boss, with a paycheck). Not even in holidays. Maybe that's why it is so hard to find one (job) now. I'm a lazy bastard aniway.

4: I can't keep a schedule, I live more time at night than during the day, maybe that's why I'm called "vampirelf" (I do like garlic, by the way).

5: When I was young, i was an hard core gamer (more than 11 hours playing all day long) now, I hardly get near a console - it's for the best, I prefer to do art, or else I would be a complete nerd otaku...

6: OMG THIS TIME THE GIRAFFE IS ORANGE WITH BLUE SPOTS!!!

The Magnificent 24

Mon Apr 3, 2006, 8:00 PM
logo Jori

This is the most important matter for my dA account since I joined here, back in January 2003. I made a decision, some time ago, to only show my 24 most faved pictures in my gallery. While this is fun because I'm always trying to do a new picture that could reach the minimal ammount of favs to stay in the gallery, this is more frustrating now.

The rule is to display for a week the new deviation, if it didn't reaches the minimal favorites, it's scrapped.

In the beginning, it was motivating, and the 24 was chosen because it's the number of deviations shown in one page for non suscribers. One who would visit my gallery would find worth the visit, I thought back then.

But now it's different. I have some pictures that i do like, and are in my scraps. I have an enormous ammount of scraps, and worse of all, those who faved my scraps will not have the scrap displayed on their fav gallery, as I've noticed.

Some scraps of mine, just as a reminder:

Okay, they are not as elaborate as some of my best deviations, but for some of them, I do prefer those than others in my actual gallery.

And I ask you: should I change my rule to "if one pic gets a fav, then it should stay at your gallery, no matter the number of final devs?"

Or should it be at least a minimal ammount of favs (let's say 10) ? And not the 24 best faved...

Aniway, my gallery at dA is only based to what YOU prefer, if I have a picture with 0 favourite, even if I do like it a lot, it will go to my scraps. I have to think in others also, not just as my selfish "importance" of beeing an artist, at least a tiny bit.

I know sometimes it's hard for my watchers who are expecting something amazing from me to get a "random test" from me that I personally consider achieved, but because it is in a different style or an oekaki, you, my watchers, could feel ripped off, I feel sorry for this, but I do try to be the best I can, so when it came to do the real stuff that I like, you'll feel happy with my Art and glad to devwatch me.

Sometimes I do ask myself HOW IN THE WORLD THIS ONE GOT'S ONLY ONE FAV?!! Anne and her jacket by joriavlis

.................NEW JOURNAL.................... :XD:

well I don't really want to do a new journal because of this but I've been tagged, so, I'll update this one (yes, I do like to show the differences before and after in Casus Belli on my front page...).

First of all, those who'll suffer from this, I tag:

Like this, you'll be obliged to UPDATE your journal, isnt this fantastic? Culprit of this evil thing: :iconshippuunotenshi: go bash him at ease, I'm like Poncius Pilatus, I wash my hands.

Now the stoopid tag:

english
Rules : The 1st player of this "game" starts with the topic "6 weird habits/things about yourself" and people who get tagged need to write a journal about their 6 weird habits/things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "you are tagged" in their devpage comments and tell them to read yours....

I tryed this time to put some more "volumetry", more depth. The Background was to alike to the charas in front, giving an eye confusion. Now, I think it's easyer to read this picture, eve in a thumbnail. In other hand, it seems that I loose some detail because I had to simplify some colouring, but it's not true, of course. To much different colours simply kills the all pic. I also insisted a lot in the fire and smoke of the boat >_<

And to finish, I've uploaded a much much bigger version (1600*1200) version to dA, go take a LOOK » www.deviantart.com/view/304894…

Now, yes, you can realize a little bit all the details of this o/

Casus Belli: never again

Tue Mar 14, 2006, 12:42 PM
logo Jori

I have almost finished Casus Belli. It is time to do a recap of everything until now :)

First of all things: I do not think I would be able to do again such image. It is too much work, to much time, for a guy who now little about this. Reall, I spent a lot of time trying to learn and discover how to do a lot of things in this -__- so from now on, I think I'll do more "normal pics". Figure this out: I've spent on Casus Belli at least 2 month of my life. And not in part-time.

For what? Just for fun -_-

Look at this detail (it's Pharao, Marine's brother, by the way):

Pharao

It took me at least 5 hours to do this. I had to learn how to draw and paint this O_o and it is not really finished yet, I still have the contrast to improve (this is about 4 times bigger than the final Casus Belli).

Casus Belli is a picture that was in my mind since this last summer. I did a lot of preliminary sketches, like those:

dacia wip first proposal by joriavlis this was the first proposal of it, in august, 17th.
Battle in Dacia study: poses by joriavlis some more studies, none of it really good. I was, by this time, searching for a good composition, and nothing would appear and do the "that's exactly what I want to do". What was really troubling for me was to find a very good pose for Marine, the main character of Casus Belli:

Dacia Pose: round 2 by joriavlis still not exactly what I wanted. I must say that at this stage, the comments and crits where fundamental. And, one day, I found a really good position: i'm getting near by joriavlis yeaah it will be like that o/

I did a lot of sketches Dacia 8 sketchs, almost done by joriavlis in order to find the best way to show the fist moments of a battle, when each side are about to met, and finally arrived to this lineart, the one I used for my final painting:

Casus Belli: Lineart by joriavlis As you can see, Marine's pose have completely changed. Again, because before that, I asked for people's opinion (remember this? Marine: Casus Belli by joriavlis and I made the conclusion that it was best that way...).

Some parts of the in progress lineart: Vexillifer by joriavlis and Casus Belli: legionairs by joriavlis

It is time now for colour o/ I will use Painter IX, really the software I'm more confortable with to do those kind of crazy things O_ô

One doubt I had about the lineart was if it would be better to not draw the horizon in diagonal, like I asked in the poll: joriavlis.deviantart.com/journ… but the answer was completly clear: 76% of you guys prefer the diagonal horizon like I have o/

roman cranes by joriavlis the cranes romans used to build castles, bridges and so on. I must say that the historical background research took me longer than actually draw the lineart. I wanted Casus Belli to be the most acurate possible (or at least, one could say: they could have done it this way).

Canis Belli by joriavlis A dog. For those who care, I hoped I could do a "Serra da Estrela" dog, a portuguese dog. It turns out to be too small for this kind of dog. Yeah, I had to search if it was realistic to consider this dog in a battlefield, and it was. Italians (i.e. romans from the Italian peninsula) used the mastino napolitano, and Serra da Estrela is surely one of his descendants, brought to Iberian Peninsula by romans. So, by the year 100, it would be "possible" to have this kind of dog in a battlefield.

Casus Belli: Print Screen by joriavlis The vexillum. This one a sacred roman standard, for units that where outside of their main legion. We can read here "LEG I MIN PF", the first legion of Minerva. (Legio I Minervia Pia Fidelis). This legion did serve under Trajan during the Dacic wars. The battle here depicted would be a legendary one (we can see it in the Trajan Column).

A bear by joriavlis here's the vexillifer, the soldier in charge of the vexillum.

Marine's Face by joriavlis finally, Marine's face. I changed a little bit her face after that.

okay, I've finished the journal, I think I can resume Casus Belli, sorry for my bad english, I'm too lazy/dead to think about it x_X

Fireman

Tue Feb 21, 2006, 5:30 PM
logo Jori

That's it, I finished my first course whithin the firemen studies: I am now able to save people from instant death o_o; (35 hours worth the time spent on them).

Tripulante de Ambulância de Transporte

I've been attending to firemen studies those last months, it will only be completed in may, with the final exam of this basic training. After that, I could be called a fireman. This is completely voluntary work, not a single euro is waiting for me, just the will to help others and to do something really useful with my life, not to mention that I'm learning a lot.

The fires of the last summer made a lot of people thinking... but here in Portugal, firemen isn't just about extinguish fires: most of the time, we are in an ambulance, helping others or doing the job that no one else wants to do (yeah, one of our teachers told us why it was more disgusting for him vomits in an ambulance than collecting body parts after a suicide in a railroad...).

Are we not really cool? XD

I'm the second one in the top left ;)

25 things about me

Mon Feb 6, 2006, 4:06 PM
logo Jori

I've been tagged by :iconjpfuria: :iconake: and :icono0maya0o:

ZOMG O_O I feel the urge to answer!!

1. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, and find line 4.

adv amply, fully; c'est ~ suffisant, it's

(well this is a french / english dictionnary...). I have some dictionnaries next to me.

2. Stretch your left arm out as far as you can.

Oh, a window.

3. What is the last thing you watched on TV?

I don't really watch TV (maybe the news or some sports like formula one or football ~ soccer in US). I just saw on my computer the TV series "Empire" (really bad, specially after seeing a wonder like "Rome"...).

4. Without looking, guess what time it is :

22h47

5. Now look at the clock. What is the actual time ?

23h39 xD And I feel ashamed, since I was speaking on the chan of e-Kaki, and the hour is always displayed XD;

6. With the exception of the computer, what can you hear ?

Crawliiiing in my skiiiin.... (Linkin Park, Crawling). Completely random music on my computer, but I still like those guys. Oh, now is Dir en Grey, Itoshisa wa fuhai ni tsuki (I'm always listening to music, always always...).

7. When did you last step outside ? What were you doing ?

Yesterday, I was at the firemen lunch (my village is creating a new firemen section, and I'm one of the 110 firemen to be).

8. Before you started this survey, what did you look at ?

The channel of e-Kaki (well, I'm always there, so, let's say the google adsense program, to make some revenues for e-Kaki also ~ the webserver is quite expensive, really).

9. What are you wearing ?

My everyday clothes... but I'm always wearing my slippers.

10. Did you dream last night ?

Like always, if I did, It would be a boring dream (Oh, I'm brushing my teeth or I'm drawing this brick in the wall, yes, even in my dreams I think about my pictures...).

11. When did you last laugh ?

Yesterday, when one of my firemen friends was joking, saying he would be truely honoured to be crushed by the Porsche Cayenne of my uncle (my uncle is very rich... and he lives next door to mine =o= ).

12. What is on the walls of the room you are in ?

Some anime posters (rurouni kenshin, FLCL, Lodoss wars, mononoke hime...).

13. Seen anything weird lately ?

Lots of snow in my village º__________º (it NEVER happens, not at our latitude!).

14. What do you think of this quiz ?

I'll get more pageviews thanks to it o/ xD;

15. What is the last film you saw ?

o_o hum... Tom Yum Goong (with the amazing Tony Jaa, but I honestly think that Ong Bak was better). And animation movie... it was the Full Metal Alchemist movie (really good, I must say).

16. If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy ?

A house in Paris, another in Osaka.

17. Tell me something about you that I don't know

o_o; I will do an history exam, in case I want to study archeology next year (only if I can't find a job until then...).

18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics,

I would finish this thing called "religion". Not Faith.

19. Do you like to dance ?

Yes. A lot. But I'm a very bad dancer XD;

20. George Bush

Americans got what they asked for.

21. Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her ?

I know a lot of really pretty names for a girl, but a lot of my comic characters already use it. I like a lot the names "Cécile" or "Patricia".

22. Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him ?

Romain xD;

23. Would you ever consider living abroad ?

This is a tough question for me, since I consider that I will always live abroad, doesn't matter where I am. But if you ask me if I consider to live somewhere outside France or Portugal, well, of course, Japan *_* or Italy... in fact, I would like to live one year in a different country every year, if it was possible.

24. What do you want God to say to you when you reach the pearly gates ?

"well done".

25. 4 people who must also do this in THEIR journal :

I SO like to annoy people

:iconmee2: :iconleaubellon: :iconpuchi-ko: and :iconcodexus:

v_v sorry about that.

Retouched Ranma - pupils + Spotlight

Tue Dec 20, 2005, 9:33 AM
logo Jori

Hello there. After all the discussion about the size of the pupils in my previous poll, I came to the conclusion that this matter is a lot more important than I could think at first. Knowing that, I saw this ranma drawing of mine, and start to retouch her eyes. And... damn, some improvments in her face, I finally am able to see what was wrong with her face (well I think  ).

First, the old one: i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217…

And now, the new one, with a better face : www.deviantart.com/view/198882…

Comments on the dev please XD; (yeah it's annoying that dA doesn't notice anymore people when we retouch something... -_- ).

I also did a bookmark for Mangastyl ' : i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217… we'll have a collection of them for sale soon (in conventions in France XD; ).

I wanted here also to give a huge spotlight to :iconaliri: (Nim sur e-Kaki les enfants ^.^).

Reflection by Aliri or Swan Lake by Aliri are self-explanatory about her huge talent, she is improving in each oekaki she does º0º

Ganbatte Nim!! ^^

Retouched, edited pic -_-

edit

I was quite surprised when I post my edited picture of snowing at conimbriga: I didn't get any comment or fav, that is not usual. After  complaining about this to some friends, they sayed to me that they weren't even aware about the new edited pic (no new message in the message center).

I asked the help desk and the response:

Hi, I apologize for the inconvenience this causes if any, but this feature was removed sometime at the end of August due to constant complaints and abuse by other members.

damn.. So now, I have to write a new journal each time I'll edit one pic (yeah, because I don't repost a pic if I just change a nail -_-). So, thanks to all of those dumb asses who exploited this feature too much.

Here's the new picture:

Jacinto Luis

Jacinto Luís

He is an Artist. One I discovered few minutes ago, when I was watching TV. And I will tell you about him in this journal, I think the story of is life could be really inspiring.

Jacinto was born in a small Portuguese village, in 1945. He lived there until he was 19 years old. By that time, in his village, he didn't had electricity, TV, radio, whatever, and the country was fighting a colonial war. So, unlike my father or my grand fathers before, he went to Paris. By foot. 8 days walking. He leaves his small village, because he really liked painting, because he wanted to discover the civilised world and run away from the war. And, what is the centre of the world in the mind of a country man of a small village in Portugal? Paris.

When he arrived in Paris, he did every possible job Portuguese emigrants did at that time, like cleaning, building or to serve coffees. Around that time, he, who liked painting, discovered that one could live only painting. Talking with artists who frequented the Café where he worked in opened his mind to this possibility, and soon, he was invited to the Ateliers of the customers of the Café. In his mind, it was a revolution knowing that one could live by the Art. And of course, he wanted to become an artist also, even if it would live in poor conditions. When his artist friends looked at what he could paint, they vividly recommend him to dedicate his life to the Art. So, he started to paint in the morning in the atelier of his painter friend, and worked in part-time during the afternoon like before (serving coffees, cleaning etc.).

But in his mind, he thought he only could become a good renowned artist if he had Art studies. He only had the primary instruction (the first 4 years of primary school, you know, the one which teaches you how to read…). So he went to Italy with the small savings of his previous jobs. It was a bit extraordinary for him, to change his status, from a poor immigrant worker to the one of an Art Student. Like he said after, the studies weren't so important to his Art path, because he had almost private lessons in Paris, although most of his learning was self-educated. What he had, in those times in Italy was opportunities to artistically grow, like free visits to museums, other artists colleagues. But the money he had eventually finished. So, a friend advised him to ask for a scholarship to the Italian Embassy in Portugal, scholarship which was granted. We have to understand here that when he arrive in Italy, the teachers there, looking at his current level, put him in directly in the second year of the school (thinking of it, it was normal, he learned before with some French masters of Painting).

After that, he also lived in Madrid, where he had another vision of the Art, more intellectual, less "organised and analytic" than the Italian school. Know, his vision of Art, it's something interesting to tell about also, and I will tell you about that in few words:

- For him, Abstract Art should be done only when you master the Figurative art.
- The only way to be a good painter, it's to understand the world you're living in, and to understand what you're painting. Knowing the object intrinsically it's the best way to reproduce it your own way.
- The reality should be bent if you must, for the sake of the Art. But not bend it because you have technical difficulties, but because you want to express something special by this bending.

For my Portuguese friends you understand Portuguese, here is his interview: www.univ-ab.pt/entrenos/wmv/05…
An article in English about his work in a metropolitan station: www.metrolisboa.pt/artemetro_u…

And finally a small article (the second painter in this page) in Spanish: www.el-punto.com/EL%20PUNTO%20…

I hope you'll like this artist, he really is inspiring, in his life, in his vision for Art and as a person.

3D?

Fri Nov 25, 2005, 10:15 PM
logo Jori

So where have I been during all this time, submitting to dA just scraps?
Well, I was learning 3D, guys, with cinema 4D :) 2 months worth my time, I finally can add this to my porfolio and increase my chances to find a decent job.

I learn a lot about perspective, about volumetry, reflexion, lighting, etc. 3D gives me another point of view about Art. But, where are the results? In my Vampirelf account, of course, I don't want to mix my gallery here of digital paintings with other stuff, so I used my account for "other stuff".

Atrium by Vampirelf and Villa Rustica by Vampirelf

I'll use my 3D model of this Villa Rustica (roman house in the country side) to do a small animation for my personal website-to-be ;)

Now, I will try to make a small 2D animation, wish me luck o_o

All this to say that it feels good from time to time to try other things, it gives you another opinion about what you were doing until now, and helps you out to discover new things. 3D is a powerfull tool to learn the basis of architecture, for instance, now I will draw houses knowing to damn well where to put those bloody beams :XD:

out of subject:
Yakitate Japan is good for you, watch it
