Modus Vivendi by joriavlis Modus Vivendi by joriavlis
Modus Vivendi

A photograph of the past.

With Modus Vivendi, I wanted to depict the roman way of life: bathing on thermae like those ones was certainly one of the most important aspects of the daily life in those days. You can see those fictional thermae (roman baths), but historically quite accurate: they could have done it. I used a lot of references, mainly those done by XIX century architect Viollet le Duc, as he reconstructed in pictures the ancient Baths of Caracalla (early III century). Those thermae are note as impressive as the Caracalla’s ones, but we should think that those characters you see here lived essentially on roman provinces.

In order to achieve this picture, I had to learn many new things for me. I put everything I know and I didn’t know on this image, just to present you (and of course me) of a “photograph” of the past.

This picture took me ages to complete (let’s say a bite more than two weeks, working all day) as you may guess, and I used mostly Corel Painter 8, with some help of Adobe Photoshop CS. Oh, yeah, this could be a wallpaper, if you like!

See the lineart here: www.deviantart.com/view/164199…

EDIT: you can download a bigger version of it here: e-jori.com/fichiers/art/modusv… it is strongly recommended that you take a look at it :)

:faint: I would never have had the patience to do all of that detail....you get a gold star for that alone!

Even the statues and the marble columns and stuff...I'm just gonna drool over it for a moment.

You've probably already heard this, but the foot of the girl in front (dunno her name...) is a bit squashed (a bit of shading on the sole and underneath the ball of the foot will fix it, I think), and Clarisse's pinky finger looks unnaturally long and straight. Other than that, it's amazing!

the coloring of the architecture is impressive, your very talented, it seems so solid and well made, I love it. Those ladies seem like they are of a different birth than roman, but then again rome was full of very diverse peoples.

thinks for letting me know. oh hey, i heard that a lot of cartoonist use photoshop to get their picture's color right or something, i'm a bit of amiture cartoonist(i like to draw funny stuff) and i would like to know how you and others get their pictures so sharp.
PS my tools i have now are pin, pencil, and marker. any advice?

it needs loads of times, above all. Photoshop is used, for me, for twaking a bit the colours (a bit more reddish, a bit more yellow). I paint Modus Vivendi for instance with painter, almost like I would do with traditional media.

Advice... is the same old thing: draw, draw, draw and draw, there is no real advice, just draw what pleases you in first, and always try to increase the difficulty of what you're drawing with time...

that's what i've been doind for some time now, im pretty good at the drawing part, i just have to master how not to leave marks in my coloring, mabie i should start usig paint instead of markers to do mt work, as i am great with painting,
thanks for the advise.
p.s. i like you deviantart page, would you mind checking out mine?
p.s.s. i like your work with the roman theams! keep it up!

Oh, of course. ^^ And its a wonderful piece of work, to boot. The very fisrt deviation on my list, I based the character's clothing very much on an actual drawing of roman clothing I saw.

Incredible. This is the kind of picture I adore, making the past alive as accurately as possible. :+fav: and a feature even though you already got a well-deserved DD on it. And if I may plug some of my own work, you might enjoy recent pieces in my gallery if you also seek illustrations done int he same spirit :)
