A portrait of a gnome alchemist character for a Savage Worlds fantasy RPG scenario.

I drew this in Photoshop, where I'm trying to learn how to improve my techniques in "painting." I can't really offer any excuses for the oddball proportions; I didn't have a pose reference, and when I draw characters out of my head, things get a bit weird. However, my main focus was on trying a different technique for drawing a character. First off, I started with a "warm grey" background (rather than working on black or white), sketched the figure, color-shifted the sketch to a dark red-grey color, then did an "underpaint" layer in monochrome. A color layer was then added (as an overlay layer), and I worked on further touching things up from there.

One problem I'm still working out, though, is that if I apply colors as an overlay layer, if I later on pull the background away (so I can have a figure standing on transparency), and I flatten the layers (so I can put the figure on a new background), any colors that were on a multiply or overlay layer and were extending out over my "underpaint" layer end up becoming solid color when applied against transparency. The result sometimes gives an ugly "halo" around the figure that I have to trim (resulting in either jaggy lines, or else I have to fix it with an artificial black outline -- which may not be the sort of look I wanted at all).

So ... I'm still working on sorting out a decent method here.

I'm sorry, but this was drawn for a specific person, for a specific project.  I'm flattered by the interest, but I'm afraid I can't give out permission to use it elsewhere.

Thanks! I have a few other drawings in my gallery; some of them are in the "featured" main folder, but most of them have been moved to specific sub-folders. (I regret that I've gone a bit overboard, and navigating all the sub-folders would likely be a pain, since they're all piled up in a column without any particular organization.)
