Moon Base

Painted with a Wacom tablet on Photoshop CS3. Used Google Sketchup to built the 3D environment. My original sketch was much simpler. I guess I just got too involved in the 3D build and ended up creating a much larger painting. This was a lot of work and to be honest I feel like it ended up becoming a little too busy.

I will work on a simpler painting next time.

I used [link] for my reference for the anchor woman.

Thanks everyone! It was a nice surprise to find that Moon Base had been given a daily deviation.

What's The Doctor doing there? Something to do with the solar flare perhaps? Nice little touch, and great artwork.

Thanks.  Yep I painted that a while ago.  And yes I had fun sneaking the Doctor in the image.  Nice catch!

I remember seeing this when I just browsed DA during my college days, before I even joined. So glad I found it again! This looks like such an amazing place! Some really futuristic elements, and yet others that look just like the things we have today, like those TV screens and mall tables... it makes you wonder just what century this picture is set in. :)

Ha ha!  Yeah.  This is an older image I made that got a Daily Deviation.  It got a bit out of hand.  I planned it to be a much simpler image to begin with.

It deserved it!

How long did it take you to make this, by the way? Just curious. :)

I did this a few years ago.  I don't remember how long it took anymore but I'm sure it was around two to three weeks.  It usually took me two weeks to finish most of the images I did back then so I'm guessing this might have taken a bit longer.  I believe this was also when I began to use the Google SketchUp 3D program to build the main design of a painting.  I still do it today to help with complicated objects like buildings, space ships and hover bikes.  It helps with figuring out how they should look in perspective and gives you the option to test different views for your image before you start painting.

The Moon Base image was originally going to be very different and much simpler.  I was going to have a few soldiers sitting in one of those round seating structures with some tall windows behind them overlooking the lunar landscape.  But when I began building the 3D model I built more than I intended and made much more work for myself for the painting.  Maybe I'll try to create my original soldier image one day.

You have a lot of dedication! :)

Hmm, that sounds like an interesting program--it lets you build 3-D lineart of squares and cones and other shapes up to then draw/paint over, or something like that? Sounds like it would indeed be helpful!

Sorry I don't have anything to give as a prize. No, I disagree!

Bloody hell, it's absolutely fantastic, would it have been too busy to put Earth in the background?

Thanks!

Ha ha.  I have to admit this was not as ambitious when I started the original sketch.  It was only going to be some military guys hanging in one of those circular seating areas with large windows over looking the moon's surface.  I feel like I should still do that original sketch the way I had intended.  Then I could add the Earth into it too.  This image has gotten a lot of attention so I'm happy for that but I still feel like I should do the painting as I had actually envisioned it.

Hmmm, this is how I would picture a Rapture in space. (Bioshock)

The fact that this is Tranquility Base has absolutely nothing to do with Tranquility Lane in Fallout, right? o.O

I'm just referring to the location on the Moon. That's all.

Man, those people don't seem worried at all that they're about to get hit by a solar flare. I guess they got some powerful shielding protecting 'em, eh?

I figure they must store their water in tanks above the building. But I would hope they don't run low. Ha ha!

I've heard water can protect against a solar flare but I'm not sure how safe they would be.
