'Thomas' Foreign Friends: Thomas' Russian Friend'
Written by Jonathan Asiamah-Acheampong
It was another busy day on the island of Sodor. Thomas is busy shunting trucks at Brendam.
THOMAS: Get in line, please. We don't want the docks to be left in a terrible state.
Everybody loved working on Sodor, they like to impress the Fat Controller.
PORTER: Phew, that's hard work, isn't it?
THOMAS: Yes. It is.
Then, the Fat Controller arrived.
FAT CONTROLLER: Tomorrow an engine from Russia is coming to help with the heavy work. Her name is Elaine. I would like all of you to make her feel welcome.
SALTY: Yes, sir.
THOMAS: You can trust in us, sir.
FAT CONTROLLER: Good.
And the Fat Controller left.
PORTER: I wonder what Elaine would look like.
THOMAS: I don't know, Porter. But we have to wait and see.
The next morning, a big tender engine arrived at the dock. She has very large wheels, a big lamp and a very loud whistle.
THOMAS: Oh. Hello. I'm Thomas.
ELAINE: Privyet, Thomas. I'm Elaine. "Privyet" means "hello" in Russian.
THOMAS: Ooh! I see. Well, welcome to Sodor. I hope you have a great time.
ELAINE: Thank you, Thomas.
Thomas was pleased. At the timber yards, Elaine was about to couple up to some flatbeds of timber. Diesel saw this and began to tease her.
DIESEL: Nearly there, Elaine.
ELAINE: Who are you?
But Diesel didn't tell Elaine who he is and he didn't tell her to stop.
DIESEL: Fancy you bumping into flatbeds like that. You'll never be part of the railway like that.
And Diesel oiled away, leaving Elaine feeling very upset.
ELAINE: Oh, dear. What if Diesel is right? I'll might be sent back to Russia. Oh, no!
THOMAS: What's the matter, Elaine?
ELAINE: That black engine distracted me when I was about to collect the flatbeds.
THOMAS: Diesel! I should have known.
ELAINE: You know him?
THOMAS: Yes. When Diesel first came to Sodor, he had an accident with some old trucks. After being humiliated, he began to tell lies about Duck, causing Gordon, Henry and James to hate him. But after being found out, Diesel was sent away and Duck was now treated with respect again.
ELAINE: Oh, I see. But I don't think I'm still welcome here anyway.
THOMAS: Rubbish! Everybody is welcome, no matter what. Whether steam engine or a Diesel engine, the Fat Controller loves all his engines.
But Elaine still felt bad.
THOMAS: Elaine, would you like to work with me?
ELAINE: Yes, please!
(THOMAS AND ELAINE WHISTLE)
So, Thomas and Elaine spent the whole day, shunting trucks, taking passengers and delivering the mail. Everybody was very pleased with the big tender engine, even Jade was impressed.
JADE: What a huge improvement!
That night, at Tidmouth sheds, the yard manager was talking to the engines.
YARD MANAGER: I would like two engines to take a heavy goods train to Tidmouth Harbour. The freight must get there on time before the ship leaves.
THOMAS: Please, sir. Can Elaine and I take the train?
The yard manager thought for a moment.
YARD MANAGER: Of course, Thomas. But I have to get Diesel to act as your back engine.
Elaine was horrified. With Diesel being the back engine, things are going to get difficult.
THOMAS: Don't worry, Elaine. Just ignore Diesel.
ELAINE: OK. I'll do my best.
PERCY: You can do it, Elaine!
EMILY: Just don't let Diesel get the better of you.
At the yards, Diesel and Bear had just finished shunting the last trucks into place. Bear has also shunted a brakevan behind the last truck, just in case.
DIESEL: Oh, look! It's Elaine again. Don't go bumping into anything! Ha-ha-ha-ha!
Elaine felt very cross. Then, Thomas had a bright idea.
THOMAS: Elaine, when I worked as a station pilot, Gordon pulled the express with me behind as revenge for me being cheeky to him. If we pull the train with him behind it, Diesel will certainly get his just desserts.
ELAINE: Good idea, Thomas.
So, Thomas and Elaine are coupled up to the front of the train and Diesel was coupled up to the brakevan.
(GUARD BLOWS WHISTLES)
The three engines sped down the Main Line. Diesel began to taunt Elaine.
DIESEL: Come on! You can go faster than that.
Elaine looked at Thomas, who winked.
THOMAS: Three,...two,...one. NOW!
(THOMAS AND ELAINE WHISTLE)
Thomas and Elaine sped up. Diesel was surprised.
DIESEL: OK. You can slow down now.
ELAINE: Why? You said we have to go faster, so you've got your wish.
THOMAS: Let's go!
DIESEL: No, no, no! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP!
Thomas and Elaine zoomed down the line at a tremendous speed. They raced through bridges and into tunnels. Diesel didn't like this, at all. At last, they arrived at Tidmouth Harbour in record time.
FAT CONTROLLER: Well done, Thomas and Elaine. You arrived just in time and the ship will now leave with the freight. And I would like to say that Elaine is now part of the railway.
ELAINE: Thank you, sir.
Then, the Fat Controller turned to Diesel.
FAT CONTROLLER: You have been very rude to Elaine. She has proved that she is a Really Useful engine. You will stay at the Sodor Ironworks until I can trust you again.
DIESEL: Yes, sir. Sorry, Elaine!
ELAINE: Oh, that's OK, Diesel.
THOMAS: Welcome to the North Western Railway, Elaine.
Now Elaine was as happy as ever. She pulled passengers and trucks with ease, she helped push the engines up hills and she told her new friends about Russia.
ELAINE: Back in Russia, there are lots of railways and mountains. I loved racing up and down the mountains. I also like to deliver very heavy loads.
DAISY: Wow, Elaine. You must really like working.
ELAINE: Yes, Daisy. I do.
And Elaine learnt that everyone is welcome to Sodor, no matter what.
