the instant before the world changed. a harbinger of the continuous disasters which have befallen the world at an exponentially exceeding rate ever since, United Airlines Flight 175 (the second plane to hit the World Trace Center's South Tower was the first true signifier (to the public at least) that the disaster unfolding before their eyes (initiating with the collision of American Airlines Flight 11 into the North tower at 8:46am) was not the result of a pilot's fatal error but rather a previously unimaginable full-fledged attack on the world's leading superpower within the most "global" metropolis on the planet.
Not only did this national tragedy occur on my birthday, i bore witness to the second plane's collision on television while watching with the rest of my first-period Chemistry class in Miami, Florida. I had been raised in Queens and learned to speak both Espanol (my first language) and English (my primary language) while growing up there. My sister was born there. My Godparents resided there. At the time, it seemed like the apocalypse and the Pentagon had yet to be impacted.
Although the opinions, facts, and emotions surrounding the events that transpired nearly two decades ago, what can be agreed by all is that everything about the American way-of-life would change forever and consequently so would the countless lives of Westerners and Arab peoples around the world for decades to come. This piece portraying a plane-like shape illustrates modern America's readiness to willingly accept the abstract nature of what occurred on that fateful day, why it occurred, how it occurred, and how it changed the economic, political, and cultural shape of both "The West" and the "Middle East".
The event itself has come to symbolize the vague abstraction associated with the overhaul of American "Liberties" during the first part of the 21st century and yet so many unanswered questions remain despite the millions of dollars spent on uncovering them. As such, i have portrayed the instant before the cataclysmic change as a bright and colourful, relatively simple piece of abstract art. I have utilized the actual shape of the plane which hit the second tower (minus its engines and vertical stabilizer) followed by three circles (which represent the other three correlated attacks of the day). I contrasted cool colours encapsulated by the thick dark lines of the shapes with those of the surrounding chaotic maelstrom of warm colours . This decision was made to visually portray the massive difference between the worldviews of those individuals who perished on the date that these disasters occurred (dying in a "pre-9/11" America) and those who would live to see how the events that ended the lives of the former would profoundly effect the lives of latter for years to come.
