Yes, fair Blighty is way behind when it comes to theatrical releases at the moment. The Last Airbender has only just started playing here, and........ooooh, dear......

In the third series of the cartoon, there was an episode in which the heroes went to watch a play based on their adventures. For comedic effect, it was performed by a very low-rate troupe that naturally offended each character in turn.

The movie was exactly like that.....just with all the irony sucked out of it.

Rather than take key elements from the series and build a movie narrative out of it, they’ve tried to cram EVERY plot point from the entire first series into a 2 hour flick, which means there is no time for any coherent story to develop. It’s just a sequence of very brief scenes in which decisions and conclusions are made and reached with utterly absurd pacing.

Beyond that; the niggles continue.

You can see exactly when the special effects budget had run out. Characters prance around waving their hands and you KNOW it said in the script there was to be some sort of elemental effect, but there isn’t one.
Result: you’re left wondering why the guys with swords didn’t just stab the heroes in the face while they were dancing about.

And then; the casting. Why is everyone in the Southern Water tribe Inuit in appearance except Katara and Sokka?!

(I’d also ask why the Fire Nation has suddenly become Indian rather than Chinese, but that’s easy to answer; China won’t play movies in their cinemas in which their people look like villains. As such; the only way the film would ever be green lit is if the ethnicity was altered.)

Shyamalan said it was his kids that told him about Avatar, and that it was they that urged him to make the film.

Conclusion: Shyamalan hates his kids.

Still; at least Aang’s first line had naught to do with penguin abuse.

I definitely think you hit the nail on the head when you said they tried to shove the whole series into a two hour flick... The thing is i don't think that it was, in fact, a terrible movie. First of al,l i really appreciated the special effects, i also appreciated the choreography. ignoring the fact that more special effects could have been added i am glad, in a way, that they weren't... Simply because i think it would have detracted from the martial arts element of the film. Obviously there are things that should be taken into account, like the fact that you simply can't make a movie out of a series and expect to NOT cut out half of the useful info. My mom however enjoyed and followed the story along with half a dozen of my closest friends. All of which never saw a scene of the series. They, like myself, are are extremely hopeful that they continue the films.
