! PIXELART - portrait (avatar) by jokov ! PIXELART - portrait (avatar) by jokov
Hi
35 colors
180 x 180 pixel size

Pixel art avatar, commissioned by vottomo

It took about 15 hours to draw from scratch
I used Amiga 500 (OCS) palette for more challange
(color range reduced to 12bit = 4096 colors to choose from)
whole picture was painted in Grafx2 with mouse

I tried to balance between realistic, paintery style and more traditional, ilustrative pixelart

hope you like it!

Maaan, I wish I had a beard like that... oh yeah, and fantastic work of course :D
P.S. Grafx2 + mouse is my first choice for pixels, too.

Ha - thanks.
Yep - works pretty well still - I use also Aseprite for 'non oldschool' works (unrestricted 8bit pixelart) and animations.

Same here. There are a few minor things I don't like about Grafx2 but for the most part I'm really happy with it. Aseprite is neat too, especially for animation. I haven't done much animation in recent years but that's definitely something I feel works better in Aseprite than in Grafx2.

True that.
I started pixelart on Amiga with 'Brilliance 2' (still superior in many areas). Grafx2 is based on this software more than on Deluxe Paint (shortkeys, UI, and many more). Palette management in Grafx2 is a bit better though.
So for me it was natural choice. I tried many programs, and some are better (like cosmigo Promotion) but as it works pretty well and is very good for 'oldschool platforms' (amiga 500, Atari ST etc.) I use it till today.
With Aseprite for anim and full 8bit works.
cheers!

Ahh the Amiga... Never owned one and therefore don't know lots of games on it. Just played a bit with a friend who had one back in the day. But many years later with the help of the internet, I found that I had actually missed out on a lot of great stuff in terms of pixel-art. I haven't really looked at a lot of these since but it sure had an influence on how I like to draw stuff today.
I've tried a bunch of programs too. Promotion seems quite powerful but to be honest, I tried different test versions but found it quite confusing and overloaded with tools and stuff. Would take me more time to get used to than I'm willing to invest. In the mid 2000s I used an old version of Paintshop Pro for some time :D Not knowing Brilliance 2 I have to say that I haven't found anything I like better than Grafx2. And I agree, the palette management is pretty good.

Anyway, I think I've taken enough of your time. Refreshing though to find somebody who replies with more than a one-liner. So long :)

I've seen this one on PJ about a week ago, went there again just to check if it wasn't someone stealing someone's ele work.
Good job on this portrait, shading is amazing.

- not this time, but I saw it on tumblr and pinterest without credit :D - so, it happens sometimes
(or maybe it's considered normal on such sites)

I really like how you translated the hair and the beard into pixel art.

Thank you :)
- I tried few attempts first, finally choosing something less realistic and more illustrative
