Why haven't you applied AA on the strands of hair and other places? Intentional retro drawback, limited palette or something else?

atari palette is limited to 16 colors (from 512 total for ST platform) so there is no much space for AA really
but some parts I left a bit raw intentionally
there is also lack of 'real' background - I have idea for 32 color version with background but with Amiga as target retro platform

Yes - I really love to. There is a chance, as we plan to move to France this year - it all depends on finances however ;)
But Revision in Germany is  first on list :)

Very nice!
I'm going to attend a demo party next summer, where they have a similar compo.
Looks like a lot of fun! Do you have any tips on choosing the palette?

Next summer sound like you have lot of time ;)
hmm. depends of what you want to draw, and what is your skill (in pixel art or <8 bit gfx) at the moment.

In low res gfx (pixel art/ old school pixel gfx etc) there are color restriction - usually 16 to 32. And platform dedicated palette (amiga OCS/AGA or atari ST/STe) On 8 bit machines palette is even more restricted and usually fixed (ie c64).

Its good idea to make plan of your drawing (sketches on paper should do) and then imagine what sets of colors you will need to represent your vision.
Choose to palette only colors that are necessary and will work on large areas (or in many important places) when you are done and have free slots you can add more (for eye catching accents ;).

I suggest to start with one-two (or very few) colors in palette and add more only when REALLY needed, watching to not overload.
16 colors is rather tough stuff (at least for me)

Many times I just painted freely finishing at about 130-140 colors and then reducing to required restrictions...
And it was hell... I don't recommend that way -it is very time consuming and brain twisting ;)
if you care about result.

good luck!
PS
What party it will be btw?

Thank you very much for the advice!

According to the rules, the restrictions are 320×256 / 32 colors.
Does not seem to mention any color palettes though.

The demoparty is located in Norway and is called "solskogen": www.solskogen.no/
I wanted to attend it this summer, but I already had plans. If only I knew about this demoparty sooner.

I have previously attended "The Gathering" for a few years,
it's pretty cool partying with 5000 other people,
but has become a game focused party, leaving the creative scene less represented.

its typical amiga resolution - 32 color its maximum for OCS (amiga 500) So it will be good idea to use 5 bit per channel palette (4096 colors to choose from)
from what I heard its very nice demoparty :)
I wanted to attend this year but unfortunately new plans appeared and I will be in Denmark at this time (so not too far ;)
But we can always send entries remotely

Yes - I was always curious of this event but at the same time as The Gathering is Revision - imo the best (strictly demoscene) demoparty nowadays - and easier to reach from my place :)

Revision looks pretty good! Maybe I will go there next easter :)

What compos do you usually participate in?

pixel gfx (oldschool/8bit) and gfx (truecolor/modern/digital painting)
sometimes photo

demo and video in work (maybe next year)

For The Gathering I have usually entered the following:
  Rendered gfx (3d stuff)
Freestyle gfx (whatever you want, usually digital paintings)
  Themed fast gfx (3 hours)
Mspaint (usually get 5th place in this compo)
  Photo

This year I also had an entry in gamedev.

I want to start demo-ing myself. Looks pretty cool, but not that sure where to start.
I know enough programming to program it myself I think, but I do not have much experience with opengl and the like.
Do you know if it is frowned upon using high res models?

This is really damn cool. I think it is very interesting how something with this amount of resolution can look just as good as something with a very high res. It seems that this is just another situation that proves that the users are the ones who make the difference in work, not the tools

Every tool can be mastered - and in pixel-art tool is not as important as in digital painting I think.

shading is a bit experimental (very restricted palette - 16 colors only) but worked well, and suites tattoos i think

Oh snap, that's amazing looking!  From the thumbnail, I thought it was a drawing or photo, and I couldn't understand why it was being showed in a Pixel group.  The way you used lighter colors to make the hair strands look backlit is fantastic.  Very nice!
