The New Road

The advent of Agriculture gave root to settled civilizations, where farms rose up to villages, to towns and sometimes to cities.  This system encouraged population growth, increasingly putting strain on the resources around which the settlements were built.  Rivers were constantly tapped for increasing irrigation needs, oceans over fished, the land overworked, necessitating the creation of ways to manipulate the environment to compensate (i.e. genetically modifying crops, etc).  Surrounding flora and fauna increasingly fell to make way for growth and progress.

Being settled in one place also encouraged a higher focus on the acquisition of possessions and a sense of hierarchy/ social standing based on what was possessed relative to those observed around us.  This new focus led to even more resources being used, often without good reason.

Larger populations required more rules and laws to control them, and increasingly these laws reflected attempts by those at the top of the hierarchy to keep their position relative to others.  As greenery increasingly fell to the needs of production, many people found themselves in concrete cells, within concrete jungles, inhaling polluted air.  Prices of goods and property continued to rise, necessitating longer working hours to afford them.  Drugs and alcohol increasingly became endemic means to cope with day to day living.
