FROM THE ISLAND OF FORGOTTEN CINEMA
UNTIL DEATH...(1998)
PLOT:
Michael Graham(Tommy Horner) has been in foster care since he was 9, ever since his mother went to prison on drug charges, his father not being in the picture, having died before he was born. Now he's on the verge of turning 18, which means aging out of the system. He was also recently diagnosed with an illness that will kill him within a year, unless he receives medical care. However, the only way he can get the medical care he requires is to have insurance, which he is unable to get on his own. Ever since Michael was 11, he has had an unrequited crush on Donna Harper(Christine Armand), an 18 year old classmate of his, who works as a courtesy clerk at a local supermarket, where she's a member of the union. Donna learns that the insurance she receives from her job also covers spouses. She learns that Michael had been dealt a bum hand his entire life, his social worker having actually sabotaged any attempt to get him out of the system before he aged out, and been left on the street with nothing but the clothes on his back, feeling he "deserved to be punished" for his mom's sins. Donna asks Michael to marry her, telling him that she knows he's sick, and if he marries her, she'll put him on her health insurance she gets from work, so at least he'll get the care he needs to live, as well as a place to live(her parents converted the basement of their house into an apartment, which is where she lives). Her original plan was to only stay married until he's able to stand on his own two feet, and get a job that has medical insurance, but remembers a promise she made to her grandmother on her deathbed, that she would always honor her promises. Since her marriage vows count as a promise, and she promised to remain married until one of them died, she decides that come hell or high water, she's going to do whatever it takes to make it work. Of course, there's also the fact she has started to develop feelings for Michael...
QUOTES:
MICHAEL: "I realize you only asked me to marry you so you can put me on your health care at work, but believe it or not, that's the most kindness anyone has shown me ever since they tossed my mom in the joint."
DONNA: "I have a little confession. When I first asked you to marry me, it was to get you on my health care at work, but originally, I only planned on staying married long enough for you to be able to stand on your own two feet, and get a job where you can get health care and live by yourself, then I'd set you free to find someone who loves you. But then, I remembered the promise I made my grandma on her deathbed, that I'd never go back on my word, I'd never break a promise. I realized when we were standing in front of the judge, all that stuff I said about love, honor, respect, until death do us part, that was me making a promise to you."
MICHAEL: "You think I only fell in love with a pretty face, blonde hair, long legs, a body made for strapless dresses, and painted toenails? No, (taps her chest) I fell in love with what's in there. Marrying me just to put me on your health insurance may not seem like much, but when the deck's been stacked against me the way it has been, trust me, it means a lot. And if you're really serious about making this work for real, I am definitely on board with that. I only have one thing to ask you right now. What about having kids?"
DONNA: "Kids?"
MICHAEL: "As young as both of us are, people will eventually ask both of us if we plan on having kids, and if we say yes, when."
MICHAEL: " So where am I sleeping tonight?"
DONNA: "In the bed."
MICHAEL: "How about you?"
DONNA: "In the bed with you, silly. Kinda makes consummating the marriage a bit easier if we're both in the same bed."
MICHAEL: "I have good news and bad news. Which one do you want to hear first?"
DONNA: "Give me the bad news first."
MICHAEL: "I won't be going to the craft fair with you on Saturday."
DONNA: "What's the good news? We've been looking forward to the craft fair for the last 3 months."
MICHAEL: "Because Subway wants me to start Saturday."
DONNA: "You got a job? Awesome, congratulations."
JAMES McALLISTER, Esq.: "Mr. Graham, I represent the plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit against Karen Dahl, your social worker. We have evidence she actively worked to keep her clients in foster care until they aged out, and colluded with foster parents to insure they were unable to support themselves once they aged out."
MICHAEL: "All this time, my gut's been telling me she's the one who made sure the deck was stacked against me. You can bet your ass I'm willing to help crucify her."
TRIVIA:
1. Donna Harper was named after a close friend of Jason Blakeley, who wrote the screenplay. The real Donna had always been there for him, and naming the female lead after her was his way of thanking her.
2. A deleted scene revealed Midge, Michael's mom, was actually innocent of the charges she was sent to prison for, and wrongfully convicted.
3. The fact Michael's social worker was named Karen was a coincidence, as it has been noted that she fits the current description of a "Karen" to a T.
4. Although Tommy Horner and Christine Armand wore flesh colored G-strings during the sex scenes, Christine was topless.
5. When they filmed the scene where Michael and Donna consummated their marriage, Tommy Horner was self-conscious, due to the fact he was legitimately aroused. He was afraid Christine Armand would be offended, but she assured him she would be more offended if he hadn't been aroused. She offered to have sex with him for real, off camera, of course, if it made him feel better.
6. Stephanie Evans, who plays Midge, Michael's mother, is actually Tommy Horner's older sister.
7. While one deleted scene revealed that Midge was actually innocent of the charges for which she was convicted, another deleted scene revealed that Karen Dahl, Michael's social worker, was partly responsible for her being arrested in the first place.
8. The medical condition Michael suffers from is never revealed. In fact, the only thing they say about it is that it's not diabetes, as several scenes show him drinking regular soda and eating sweets, which aren't recommended for people with diabetes.
9. The original ending, which was deleted, is set 25 years later, and reveals that Michael received a settlement of $500,000, which he put out at 8% interest. It reveals that he's using the interest to supplement his income all this time, and to this day, has never touched the principal.
