FROM THE ISLAND OF FORGOTTEN MOVIES

Happy Together(1997)

PLOT:
Two sisters, 16 year old Monique Horner and 21 year old Jessica Horner(Mary Anne Cape and Melissa Doone), are about to be separated by their father and stepmother, when their stepmother plans to send Monique to boarding school. The sisters, who are very close, fear their stepmother is trying to keep them apart permanently, so they make a wish on a falling star they could be together forever. The next morning, the two of them wake up conjoined at the back, and surgeons are unable to separate them.

TRIVIA

1. Despite the fact their characters are 5 years apart in age, Mary Anne Cape and Melissa Doone are actually twin sisters, who were 19 at the time filming began.
2. Writer John Cannery made the villain of the movie the girls's stepmother as a way to say "fuck you" to his own stepmother.
3. The movie was shot under the title "Siamese Sisters", and was changed by director Greg Peabody after hearing the song "Happy Together" by the Turtles on the radio.
4. The movie did receive one Academy Award nomination, for Best Makeup, for the makeup that simulated Monique and Jessica's conjoinment.
5. The roller skating while joined back to back scene was actually performed by Mary Anne Cape and Melissa Doone without any stunt performers, CGI, or any trickery other than a harness the two wore.
6. Mary Anne Cape actually came up with the ending of the movie, where Monique and Jessica's mother prevents their stepmother from putting Monique in boarding school. It was a situation a friend of hers experienced in real life, his parents were divorced, and his mother had primary custody. His stepmother had planned to send him to boarding school in Switzerland, and Mary Anne pointed out that as the custodial parent, his mother would have something to say about it.
7. Melissa Doone ad-libbed the line "Try listening to "The Great Gig in the Sky" when you're not stoned out of your mind." after hearing the song for the first time.
8. The "Mean Girl" clique in Monique's school was called "the Tampons" in the script, but the term is never used on-screen, due to the fact the explanation would automatically give the movie an R rating, when they were going for PG-13.
9. Although the film ends with the sisters separated, a planned sequel would have had them decide to become permanently conjoined.
