Haha, I never really liked Pippi Långstrump as a child! I was much more interested in the high fantasy stuff Astrid Lindgren wrote, like Mio, My Son and The Brothers Lionheart. They don't seem to be as popular as Pippi outside Sweden, and I'm not sure why.
I never heard of them. I guess publishers would not take the risk. I read a couple of the Pippi series as a kid and liked them some. There were not a lot of children's books in translation that I remember. Television was huge competition for children's entertainment from 1950 on here.
I mean, they're both very dark tales, even though they are aimed at children. So that might be why they aren't quite as well-known. But I definitely recommend them! Christopher Lee actually played the villain in a pretty weird adaptation of Mio, My Son.
