a monster who would have disgusted Daemon if he'd still been around. Of course it is still ambiguous; was Maelys just as cunning yet savage and evil as the tales would tell? Or was he a wretch in unholy amounts of pain whom Barris actually did a favour to in putting him out of his misery? Ultimately, he also represents how the blackfyre's cause itself had devolved from any (genuine or otherwise) notion of change and fixing injustices in Westeros to a doomed and barefaced grab for power by people who no longer had any other idea of what they were fighting for. Maybe that's why the golden company never gave Maelys Blackfyre but will be giving it to young Griff.
frankly as well, given how much inbreeding they do, there should have been way more freaks like Maelys in the Targaryen family tree.
