Milotic - The Transsexual Pokemon by JocelynSamara Milotic - The Transsexual Pokemon by JocelynSamara
I bet you clicked on this thinking I was joking. :XD:

I came up with this theory about a year or so ago, I would say. It was during one of those hypothetical "if you were a Pokemon, what would you be" type of conversations. Milotic, being my favorite, had me stopping to really think about it. And this was when I first picked up on these things: how the Feebas-into-Milotic dynamic sounded remarkably similar to that of transition for a transsexual.

My theory is mine alone. I've never heard anyone else say anything of the sort (especially not from the creators). That said, there are an awful lot of extremely convenient coincidences, and I stand by this theory rather proudly. What can I say? Milotic is pretty badass. In the small, unlikely event that it IS in fact intended as a representative of the transsexual community, that is one awesome ally to have.

Anyway, I've been explaining this idea to a few people individually recently, so I decided to just make this and share it with others to spread this idea. In a perfect world, maybe this theory will even make it all the way to Nintendo so it can be confirmed or denied with certainty. ^_^

[EDIT] - I changed the wording a little.

[EDIT 2] - Look what I've started. XD - [link]

To the comments saying "but Feebas doesn't change gender when it evolves":

...strictly speaking, trans people don't change gender on transitioning; they're already their gender, it's just that their body and presentation are able to catch up.

It's a nice thought and sound logic, but just one problem: Feebas' gender doesn't change upon evolution.

On the plus side, that one Black Belt in X/Y is definitely trans.

Just have to mention this wonderful little coincidence.
Juan (the last gym leader in Hoenn) has a Milotic in the anime.
He also gives out......you are so not going to believe this....

(sigh) She makes a webcomic with a trans girl protagonist named Rain. As in, both the comic and the character are named that.

Apologies if you've addressed this already, but what are your thoughts on female Azuril potentially changing genders when they evolve? Could that apply to any facet of the LGBT community?

I don't know if that would more add to a transgender argument in Pokemon but i think that is more a reference to in nature some animals, usually amphibians and lizards can change their gender in cases were there is a lack of either females or males

Well, in that case what about male Gardevoir, male Gothirita, or better yet, male Lopunny (which is actually based on a Playboy bunny)?

But on a more serious note, that's quite a story, I must say I'm impressed. And more so, in the vast variety of Pokemon related theories and urban legends, this one makes just too much sense ^^

Yanno, I'm all for transgender support, and I love you comic, and nerd pride has always been a thing, but don't you think you might have overthought this a little?
And I wouldn't call Feebas weak or helpless.
If anything, this is more an Ugly Duckling-esque thing than anything else.

But to each their own, I suppose.

Overthinking? Not at all. At the time I came up with this, I made it up on the spot.

As for Feebas being weak, it's actually in the name. I'm relatively certain it's a portmanteau of "feeble + bass". ^_^

I actually didn't notice that about the name. Then again, I haven't exactly been playing anything past Gen 2 in awhile. When you're still hooked on Chrystal after ten years, it's hard to not spend my late teens playing it like I should have.

I have a pokemon that randomly changed gender on me... In all honesty I have NO idea what exactly happened. I caught a female Pidove, evolved into a Tranquill, still female, and when it hit Unfezant BAM Male. I was so confused but I completely understood his feelings on the situation...

I mean male Unfezants are pretty badass after all

By the coloration argument, you could say that Rosa's color scheme is meant as a subtle tribute to the trans crowd. (in addition to the primary colors, of course)

I cannot lie, I'm not too fond of your statement "Once that beauty gets maxed out (read as: it passes)."

Trans* people should not be required to pass by any means, nor should they be considered any less beautiful because they don't pass. There are those trans* people who /don't/ pass, and have no problem with that, but that does not directly mean they are any less beautiful than anyone else.

I get what you were trying to do, but I think that making that relationship has some pretty negative undertones.

I see what you're saying, but it wasn't really meant to be literal. It was transference of Pokemon terminology into real world terms. "Beauty" is the stat that increases in-game. I was associating that more with one's perception of oneself. As hormones take their effect, transfolk start to look more the way that they want to. They can look in the mirror without wanting to break it, because they finally see themselves in it. They're beautiful in their own eyes (which is the most important thing). Perhaps this wasn't as clear as I wanted it to be, but it's what I meant.

However, I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that not every transperson can pass. EVERYONE can pass. The same methods for passing may not work for everyone, but that doesn't mean anyone explicitly can't pass. And even if they don't pass, that does not mean I think them any less beautiful. I never said otherwise.

Hormone therapy is not perfect for everyone, not everyone can go on hormones, and some people just don't care to pass. I understand you're making an analogy, but the direct reference your making between beauty and passing insinuates more than you mean to. Even if you don't personally think that, your statement says "Once that beauty gets maxed out (readas: it passes)." I realize you began by saying personal opinion of beauty. And that's okay, I find that totally acceptable. Hormones are a way for SOME (not all) trans people to feel better about themselves. That's true. However, a trans person finally feeling totally comfortable with themselves does not directly equate to them passing, nor should it need to.

I get the point you're trying to get at, like you said, but the way some of it is worded can have icky undertones.

I just wanted you to know that I removed that line. I don't want there to be icky undertones in something, when I was going for a positive effect. And, I'm sorry if I at all came off like a jerk before.

Nah, it's okay. It's just I have friends who /don't/ pass. They cannot help that, it's not a matter of how much effort they make.

Thanks for changing it. It means a lot to me.

Well, you're right that this theory is yours alone; I can't say I've heard it anywhere else. Still, the explanations you give do seem to make sense. You've definitely put a lot of thought into this, and it's awesome that you're able to connect one Pokemon's "story" with your own experiences, and with the experiences of transpeople in general. Thank you for sharing this piece of your mind!

Oh, and I'm not sure how to interpret the caption, but - did you draw the Milotic? 'Cause it looks really good!

Yes, I did draw it. I used a sprite from one of the games as a reference. First time I've ever drawn one that didn't suck too, so I'm kinda proud of that. ^_^
