Endless Realms bestiary - Citrine Dragon

Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.

Citrine - uplifting, positivity, immunity to negative energy

Differing from other dragon concepts in the game so far, this dragon isn't a demigod or avatar of a particular elemental or cosmic force.  For the gemstone dragons, I was given almost entirely free reign, so I decided to take inspiration from historical and pagan lore.

Since I had to do over a dozen additional dragons, I tried to include at least a few different varieties - I wanted to do at least one "cuter" gecko-y dragon, especially since the art director loves fairy dragons!

Don't worry! I won't tell him because I already ate him...
jocarra's avatar
lol!  That's terrible XD

... was he tasty? :V

Well, the fleshy part did not taste like orange or any citrine, but it tasted like ehmm......chicken...
And its juice wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be since it tasted like blood most likely, wierd....

This one is really cute, I love the design. The vibrant oranges and yellows are really nice as well, the dragon almost appears like he's glowing
Out of curiosity how long does it usually take for you to complete each of these bestiary images? :)

Thanks!  Hehe, yes, he should seem quite bright (figuratively as well as literally)!

Bestiary pieces typically take me about 6 hours on average.

Have I mentioned how much I adore the way you put so much personality and character in your artwork? I just knew this guy was going to be optimistic and chatty and probably rather sassy in an adorable way before I even read the description.

Oh, thank you so much! <3  I really appreciate it :)

Yeah, when I was first assigned these dragons, all I was given was a list of gemstones.  Ruby, emerald, pyrite, malachite, opal, citrine.  I asked, what's their deal?  What are they like?  They didn't know X3  They just wanted an alternative to chromatic/metallic dragons, and thought gemstones would be visually appealing - aside from that, I wasn't really given any direction, which left me with the question: what to do with all these dragons?!

So I made characters out of them.  I researched the pagan/historical lore for each of them and built a sort of character/personality out of each one, and suddenly it became so much easier!

This one looks playful!  Love it!  The tail is awesome.  (I think my eyes are messing with me, though, as the near wing looks odd...?)

Hehe, yeah, a friend was mentioning how this guy probably is best buds with Hematite, partly because he loves to chat and Hematite just sits there and listens and is the only dragon that never tells him to go away X3

Hm, it might be because the back wing is showing behind it?  He's supposed to be holding his wings semi-folded, pointed down, almost as if he's putting his wing-wrist on his hips (if that helps visualize?)

Bwahahahahaaa...I totally agree with your friend about Citrine being best buds with Hematite!  *Chortles*

Ah...ok.  Just looks like the wing arm is angled up from the shoulder, then down at the elbow, and the wrist turned under and back.  Looked uncomfortable!  (Like I said, my mind playing tricks on me.)
jocarra's avatar
Well, you're right, in that that IS basically how I've drawn it, but it's not really a particularly uncomfortable position for wings, I don't think - it's sorta how this hawk is holding his wings, except Citrine is doing it a bit more "openly."

Can't see the pic: link says I don't have credentials to view image.

I'll take your word for it, though.  You always seem to get your anatomy correct, even for mythical creatures!

Hm, weird :b  Here's a different one, this time of an albatross - www.nzbirdsonline.org.nz/sites…
