Photography, especially outdoor photography is unique in that the forms are already there for you. While painters, illustrators and printmakers may work from a model, it is up to them to create the scene. With photography, we typically have a "scene" in front of us. This is both a benefit and a curse. As photographers, we sometimes have the urge to look at something, and try to replicate it as-is. Many a quality photograph has been thrown out because it did not provide an exact replica of a scene. In my opinion, this causes casual snapshooters and seasoned professionals alike to miss nuances which would make some of their favorite photos. A

Lately I've gained an interest in reading academic philosophy. Immanuel Kant hits many nails square on the head, especially when it comes to defining pleasant and beautiful. In my own words, he states the fine appearance of pleasant art is merely incidental in nature (i.e. advertising art may be quirky or pretty but it isn't so for the sake of ones pleasure, it exists purely to sell a product) while beautiful art is created with the intent of passing a sense of nature and/or pleasure to the viewer/ listener.
