Here are the films released in 2017 that I consider bad, mediocre & downright atrocious. Since I haven't seen every film, there will be a chance that this list will be updated in 2018.

This film purely exists because of a gimmick. The filmmakers thought the idea of Alec Baldwin voicing a corperate CEO Baby was funny, so they decided to make a feature film centred on that joke. Unfortunately, the story is an eye-rolling cliché storm & the humour of this film is downright obnoxious. To this day, I wish I could wash the baby bottoms out of my head. The only thing that saves the movie is the well executed animation because it shows off a lot of visual imagination & I guess I'll give the writers props for finding a decent explanation for how the baby is talking & acting like an adult. But The Boss Baby is one of the weakest animated films in a year that could be considered mixed for the medium's wide releases.

I did not want this film to be terrible. I thought the Scarlett Johansson controversy was unfair & I want America to make at least one triumphant manga adaptation. But, what we get is simply underwhelming. The story the filmmakers tries to tell ends up boring in a lot of places, making me not care about the Major's arc. Because of this, the film felt like every other generic sci-fi that HollyWood likes to churn out these days & one of the most famous manga & its impactful animated adaptation deserve a lot better. But it's nowhere near as bad as DragonBall Evolution thanks to a few redeeming qualities. The world is visually pretty to look at, I will give the film props for being a little bold with its villain approaches (until the third act gives us a shitty one), the third act did start to get interesting, the actor they got to play Batou does justice to the character & Takeshi Kitano steals the show every time he's on screen. Overall, Ghost In The Shell is harmless enough, but it's stale, hollow & empty execution makes it almost worthless.

From one adaptation to another, here's Netflix's attempt to adapt one of the best detective projects on the planet & this one is also underwhelming. This one came so close to being on the same levels of DragonBall Evolution by making its characters flat & boring to sit through & the writers devote some of our time to one of the worst romance subplots of all time. Also, the writing is filled with a lot of stupidity which is a shame because Death Note is one of the smartest things I've ever witnessed. It made me appreciate media that makes people think. However, there are things that I will say are genuine redeeming qualities. The heavy use of blood & gore makes the director recommendable for future slasher films, the filmmakers had a vision they wanted to tell even if it wasn't executed well & Willem Dafoe as Ryuk is 100% perfection. Death Note is not a good film in Netflix's library, but I do recommend it for Defoe's performance alone.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold on. What is this film doing here? It came out in 1991 & its amazing. This must be some kind of cruel joke.

Oh
This film may be pretty to look at in some areas & it may have some wonderful compositions from Alan Menken, but this film should not exist. It's so identical to the animated classic to the point where comparisons are unavoidable & I watched the entire thing bored out of my mind. Any changes it did make are hit & miss to say the least. One of the new (but forgettable) songs is legitimately fantastic & I loved the idea of the furniture servants having their life on the line because of the rose. But there are some bad ideas like the expanded role for the Enchantress who cursed Prince Adam (who you all know as The Beast) & the magic teleporting book is one of the worst big-lipped alligator moments ever put to film. With some wooden performances, questionable auto tuning & ugly CGI, Beauty & The Beast is a big-budget school play that wastes all the money Disney invested for the project. It's even gone to the point where I'm waiting for these remakes to die & even if we get more, I hope they don't repeat the same mistakes here.

Dammit, this film was selling a good idea & Sony screwed it up. The jungles of Jumanji is filled with so many perilous wildlife, its got the great chops for a horror. But someone thought it was a good idea to make it a comedy & what we get is an annoying trek with a generic plot to boot. A majority of the humour is screaming & yelling & I swear Kevin Hart & Jack Black are trying to be irritating on purpose. The plot admittedly isn't boring, but the potential is undermined by a weak video game gimmick & the savage animals don't have much to do.......lame. If you like it, that's fine. It's just not for me.

I haven't seen it. I refuse to watch it to be honest. It's the same case with Fifty Shades Darker.
